Pentax will never do full frame IMO. They're a business after all, so they'll pursue Kx-like ideas rather than pro formats becaust that market is poorly served with lesser Canikons. Oly's already abandoned serious pro market for the same reason (who would use an E3 if they were business-serious?). Look at how unsuccessful Sony's being with their excellent ff...superb design, superb optics, great reviews, no buyers. And Canon's easily able to drop prices even further on whatever follows 5DII because it's got economy of scale.

We have heard it all before. At least if you have frequented Pentax forums for awhile.
We have heard: "Pentax will never release more than one Limited lens"; Pentax would never release a DSLR ever"; "Pentax will never release a MF DSLR"; "Pentax will never release more FF lenses" etc....

It is inevitable that Pentax will make FF anyway. Patience is the key.

Oly left the pro market long before digital. They left with the advent of autofocus SLR's. Which is a shame, a Digital Olympus OM would be an awesome camera. But, don't assume 24x36 will always be a pro format. It won't be. There will be sub $2000 FF DSLR's sooner or later (probably sooner). And for those of us non-pros that rarely ever use telephoto lenses a $1500 ff dslr vs a $1100 APS-C DSLR is an easy choice. And we may very well have that choice to make in 2011.

IMO the pro vs amateur market is not simply going to be a matter of sensor size in DSLR's, its going to be about camera type. I imagine a great number of current entry level owners (most I know only own the kit lens) will switch to mirrorless cameras after their DSLR's wear out.

A year ago if you said Pentax will come out with two DSLRs that do HD video and built-in 3 shot HDR mode in 2009 people would say your crazy. FF DSLRs will be mainstream by 2011 like the mid-range K-7 is today IMHO .

Pentax! You clearly must release FF DSLR before 2012...
Because it would be suxx, if apocalypse photos are taken with Canikon.

Pentax will release a FF someday, but before that they will need :
- To have a FF sensor available,
- To have the ressources for releasing one (while still making new APSC DSLR that are the ones bringing volumes and money)

If we take as example the 12Mpx used in the K-x (and Leica's X1), we can can safely assume that the 24Mpx from Sony will be available in a about a year from now.

Pentax have clearly stated that there will be no 35mm in 2010 as they're concentrating their spare ressources on the 645D. (I say spare ressources because the focus of the company is still on APSC like the rest of the market)

Pentax will have to release a 645 lens lineup as well, before starting to prepare a FF lens lineup (I consider the APSC lineup to be almost complete)

So saying a FF realease in 2011 is not stupid, FF will probalby join the sub 2000€/$ sweet spot by then, so the amateur market would massively shift to FF at that moment. (And BTW the "pro" market would then shift to MF to some extent)

Wait, whoa...hold on. I generally agree with your statements (since you came back to Pentax cameras, that is )...I think a more accurate analogy would be:

Choose between a $1500 FF camera and an $800 APS-C. FF isn't the only thing that will come down in price. Both are on a sliding scale.

That's all

I'm waiting for a bit

for the folded-optical system that permits use of a medium format sensor (ISO expressed exponentially) in a K-X sized body and that can take advantage of DA lenses. Sealed against Armageddon. With a pliable-but-stable outer shell that's easily molded to the user's hands.

Then I'll complain about paying MSRP at the shop that can explain and demonstrate its value.

Pending that .... Happy New Year all!
