04 toy lens wide any good?

I am thinking of buying this lens as the prime is a little to close for my indoor shots. I am a little worried though becuase of the fixed Ap of 7.1.
Has anyone any experience using this lens and and pics.
Thanks.

its a lens you wont ever be using indoors, the lens is crap, both the toy lenses are crap... People seem to like the tele toy but since I got the sonnetar its worthless...

The two toy lenses have not developed a big following in the US. Of the two, the tele seems the preferred lens. When I shot the tele thought it was kind of soft vs the 01 prime. Others have posted some pretty sharp images from theirs. May need to try it again. F8 and flash sync at 1/13 is not easy to work around.

The wide toy seems less loved. Many thought toys would be an effect like a Lensbaby or something. They don't work that way. It was reported that Pentax expected the toy lens to be used with the toy settings in the camera. When I tried the toy wide it was shot straight. It was softer than the toy tele and kind of bland. Now I want to try it again in full "toy mode". Probably won't work if you are looking for a standard wideangle. F7.2 and slow flash sync is hard to work with. Could always return it if not happy.
thanks

My toy tele is good, very sharp, no complaints. Probably down to sample variation. Do not have the toy wide because I see no real need for it, it is not that wide anyway. Take a look at the Pentax Q review on Dcresource, on the Gallery page there are a few sample images made with the toy wide. Chromatic aberration fest guaranteed. If you still want to buy it after viewing those images, then go for it :-)

I like both of these toy lenses, maybe because the wide has got some quite pronounced distorsion, and the tele is usable for macro , but surely because they are very cheap ! :

Zygonyx, I agree with northislander. You have very nice images made with toy lenses. Now I know that I need to try them again. Good job Zygonyx.
thanks

Great images but i decided to pick up a Panasonic GF3 with 14mm lens, adobe lightroom 3 thrown in for £199.99 after £50 cashback.
Still loving the Q but the GF3 is a nice alternative when i need a wider angle and i can keep that in my other jacket pocket.

What a steal! Where did you get that from?

I got one for £49 (ex-display) and I think its a lovely lens, I like the manual focussing range and it seems to produce very sharp images, and focusses very close as well. I want the Fisheye next.

Personally, at the price of a Pentax 04 + Pentax 05, I would throw in the extra 50$ and get the Pentax 02 zoom...

Why is the flash sync only 1/13? Is that true for all lenses? Kinda makes a hot shoe worthless then...

The 01, 02 and I assume the new 06 can shoot at 1/2000 flash sync with the built in, and 1/250 with external flash units.
The problem with other lenses 03, 04, 05 is the lack of a lens shutter.
The new adapter should allow K mount lenses to shoot at faster sync since it adds the mechanical shutter.

DavidOBryan, the answer to your question is yes. I posted a few shots in the forum. Then took a detour and disassembled the Toy Wide to remove the aperture tape. Posted pics of that and have now put an f4.5 aperture in lens. Still playing with that. Eventually I will probably put lens back to stock.
thanks

I'd like to see some shots from the f4.5 wide angle toy lens...
