Nikon 28mm f/2.8 AI-s

Took some long exposure photos with my best Nikon lens.

Nikon 28mm f/2.8 AI-s. Apparently this is Nikon's sharpest wide angle manual focus lens from what I've read in several places. I haven't had the chance to use it so much in day light since I've been taking photos of birds and use 105mm or 200mm

ISO 125, F/5.6 / 2 second exposure

100% Crop

For some lenses PF can be reduced by stopping down, but each lens has different behavior on the Q.
There are some lenses that have well controlled CA/PF on the Q, and others that show it real bad.

The DA*300 does not show PF, and in my experience the Sigma 70-200 HSM II is also very clean.

The DA*200 has an issue with it, as do many older lenses.

That's the reason for this thread, to see what folks are running into with the various lenses they are trying.

To avoid purple fringing with my older lenses I just try not to take photos where there are too many subjects at different depths. This is where the fringing occurs I think because it is more noticeable when the subject is out of focus. I could be wrong but I rarely get PF when I'm shooting one subject that is completely in focus.

DAL 18-55mm f3.5-4.5

Strangely enough, this lens is quite usable on the Q. It has no PF to speak of, and takes well to being stopped down.

First off, wide open it behaves like a soft-focus lens. Highlights glow, and the image seems otherworldly. Moreso at 18mm than 55mm, but both exhibit the same glowing effect. The lens is very soft here, obviously. It's still soft when stopped down one click, but really sharpens when stopped down two clicks.

My approximation is that one click is f4.5 at 18mm, and f8 at 55mm. Two clicks is around f6.3 at 18mm and f11 at 55mm. I didn't go beyond two clicks.

At 55mm and two clicks, which is about f11, the photo clearly shows considerably more detail than the f8 shot. Which is surprising, I'd expect diffraction to be hitting hard at f11.

18mm wide open

18mm one click

18mm two clicks

55mm wide open

55mm one click

55mm two clicks

My guess (and I do mean guess) would be that if it is the same settings then it would have to be the subject. The swans look greyer (maybe they were in a shadow) in the first one. In the 2nd photo they are of a much higher contrast. Perhaps this is causing the purple fringing?

In the second pic if you look closely at right swan there appears to be camera shake that is showing up as a purple ghost.

Also since the second pic is at higher shutter the light was brighter so that could also be part of the reason.

Perhaps run some tests using a tripod on solid ground?

Thanks for the recent reviews everyone. Finally got around to updating the index.
Adam created a program that will sort the lenses and group based on categories.
At the moment the categories are K-Mount Prime, K-Mount Zoom, and Other Mount.
If your lens appears in the wrong category please let me know here or via PM.
Also let me know if it looks like we need to break things down more as the list grows.
Thanks.

SMC-P FA 50mm f2.8 Macro

The FA 50mm macro doesn't seem to be on the list yet. These images were coupled to a Fotodiox PK(AF)-P/Q adapter; handheld.

I posted FA*80-200 in the other thread.
The Sigma 30/1.4 will be coming soon.
I got very good night image @f4 and f5.6. (The lens is optimums from f.2.8-5.6)
I accidently deleted the good picture and then the battery depleted...
