Pentax Super-Takumar 150mm f4

Surfing *bay the other day and found 2 interesting lenses, this like new 150mm for about $50 and an additional 135, I bid on both hoping I might get one, turned out I was the only bidder on both. Just received the first one the 150. All shots @ f5.6 using the Pentax adapter, ISO 125 and after some testing with the SR set @ 135?? (check out the learning curve thread) but it works. The PF'g is well under control for an old 42mm mount lens. Images sharpened, some contrast added and re-sized. This gets me up to 825mm in a very small pkg that is easier to hand hold than my ST 200. All shot through a window, it's still to cold out and raining.

That 150 looks like a winner. Will it take the place if the 135 you've been using?

It may but I have an additional 135 coming Monday, it's a Auto-Takumar 135mm F3.5 rated 9.7 for sharpness by this site. Hope it's a good copy, The M 135 I have is rated 8.7 and I have been happy with it but things can always be sharper.

Beautiful shots of the ducks and thanks for the distance info.
The helps to gauge the reach.
Excellent detail at .5 and 1 setting it looks like you have the 500mm all figured out.
The snail looks cool too with the dfa100

Sigma EX DG 70/2.8 macro

Pentax Adapter Q. All shots handheld (the macro shots were on a table and I was able to use that for support), available light. I didn't make note of the aperture settings, but from memory the first two would have been at setting 1.5 or 2 (i.e., f/4.5 or f/5.6) and the macro shots at setting 0.5 (i.e., f/3.5).

50% crop

Moderate crop

1:1 macro, 4 shots stacked in Zerene Stacker (PMax retouched from individual shots), uncropped
The pale yellow spot on the spider's head is an individual grain of pine pollen

Conclusions: certainly a good performer on the Q both as a telephoto and an extreme macro lens. Some CA but I have done no correction for it in the shots here, and it isn't bad. It's a fairly large and heavy lens for handheld use on the Q. For macro keep in mind that at high magnifications the effective f-number goes up; a good approximation is f(effective) = f(nominal) * (1+magnification), so at 1:1 the f-number is effectively doubled. Which is to say, for shots above 1:2 or so, use a smaller f-number.

Edit: Some testing in a studio setup (tripod, SR off) shows f/4 (setting 1.0 on the Pentax Adapter Q) as the best aperture at 1:1 magnification.

Pentax DA 50-200mm

All shots were at 200mm using the Fotodiox adapter with built-in aperture ring (wish I had the OEM ). Wide open the lens is not very good, images are too soft and with some chromatic aberration. Once stopped down a bit the images get much sharper and the CA will be almost all gone.

Here are some samples with no post processing aside from a bit of exposure correction on maybe two shots.

I'm sure even better results could be achieved with a better tripod... But overall I recommend this lens on the Q if you'd like to try birding (or voyeurism).

Beautiful shots Guakala
Is it possible to change the focal length on the lens without manipulating inputs on the q (or resetting parameters) and still have decent IQ ?
