Pentax K-5 Serial Numbers - Specifications
The PENTAX K-5 DSLR is developed using the highly acclaimed PENTAX K-7 as its base, the K-5 inherits the exceptional reliability, user-friendly operation, array of advanced features and compact, lightweight body of its predecessor, yet it is more resourceful and flexible in photographic expression.

Some early K-5 shipments included defective sensors "stained" by dust-like particles. Serial numbers in red below may indicate this flaw.

Please check any used K-5's serial against the numbers in our database to make sure it is defect-free!

4309587Hiddenno damage as such, however with some lens the shutter release button goes nuts, continually clicking, even when I'm only holding the camera. Major problem as it won't let the button be released to take an image. 27,640 shutter releases, manufactured 2012:0309

could also have this stain in the sensor issue as there is a blob that shows on my astro pics- have just read about that since registering the body half an hour ago here

4245821HiddenIn early June pop-up flash stopped working. Shortly after that I started having the freeze up issue. Camera would freeze, it would take up to 10-15 seconds for camera to turn off. After turning back on camera would work for a while, but then freeze again condition got steadily worse and finally sent camera back on 7/6/12 (was waiting until after a music festival) Received camera back on 7/30/12. They replaced the main pcb/fpc and the pop-up flash assembly plus the usual cleaning and upgrade to the latest fw.Canada

4226424HiddenPurchased by mail order from SRS Microsystems and arrived in apparently pristine condition. A tiny sensor oil spot was visible by 300 clicks but this was removed by repair centre. Later realised (December 2012) that the shake reduction system was actually making my images at all shutter speeds more blurred. Once again, camera returned for repair under warranty. Disappointed by Pentax quality control standards, which have cast strong doubts on the likelihood of me continuing to invest in this system. Probable that I will gradually revert to micro four thirds.Watford, UK

Arranging a return/swap from retailer. Follow up: Successfully swapped for another K5 with no flaws. Thanks DCW Brisbane for great service.Australia

4214753HiddenBlack; body only. Sensor was accumulating spots at an abnormally fast rate and attempts to wet clean the sensor ended up producing a particle beneath the optical low-pass filter. Camera body was returned as defective. See this thread for details.B&H

4026374HiddenThis camera was returned under a 14 day return policy and the owner said there was nothing wrong with it. However calibration is down before this type of return before the camera can be sold as new, and it failed it's "meter level" calibration. It was somehow shipped to me by accident as a new product from Henry's on-line store. I was immediately offered a new replacement and returned the camera to the nearest Henry's for an exchange. The shutter count when I received it was 760. The manufacture date was March 2011.Halifax Canada

3972944HiddenOne spot on top right quadrant of image. Looks like dust between IR filter and sensor - not stain. Wet cleans can't budge it. Tested using DA 18-55 and 55-200 lens.
After using 18-135 WR lens, I can hear and feel air hissing around rear screen - vacuum effect of zooming in and out is causing dust to be sucked in behind the screen cover in a V pattern. So much for dust proof.

3965255HiddenStain started appearing after about 40 shots and 10-15 minutes of video recording. Camera was bought at B&H, NY, USA on 9th of Feb, '11
According to exiftool 7.85 the cam came with zero mileage. It has 40732 internal serial number, production code 2.2 (FWIW) and manufacture date Jan 19, '11

I think I gonna give it a try and take the replacement from B&H and if the replacement fails as well then will try Pentax USA service.
