The Tamron 18-250 is Looking Real Good

Just received my Tamron 18-250 3.5-6.3 DiII yesterday, and hey it is a bargain. Yep, already I can hear the purists in the forum harrumphing about zooms vs primes vs DA* vs Macros, BUT.

This is a darnn good lens, way better than the Sigma 18-200 I had before, and if used properly within it's limitations seems to turn out some really great images.

For example, this morning I shot a few closeups of peach blossom, the results were so good I did not bother putting on a Macro.

f/16 - 1/90th - 58mm - iso 200

Have taken a bunch more test shots, will post if anyone is interested.

I'm hearing you Matix. I got my 18-250 about 2 weeks ago and it has turned out some great stuff. Super happy with the purchase. Did you buy yours from here in Oz of from OS. Mine came from the us and cost me about $615 AUD all up including postage. Keep shooting

Hi Switch79, I purchased mine from Kamera_Store in Japan, he is really good to deal with, I have purchased several lenses from him already. The US best price was around $499US PLUS shipping, his was $487 US, or $449 plus $38 US for EMS Express 4 days to my door. I landed mine here in OZ for $531 AUD.

Matix, that is a really nice shot. I have the Sigma 18-200 and have been wrestling with making the switch to the 18-250. I know I can trade in the one I have to move up, but I'm not yet convinced that the extra 50mm is worth it, especially since I have the Sigma 135-400 in my bag.

Thanks Shawn, trading up for me from the Sigma 18-200 was not for the length for sure, I have the Bigma 50-500 for that.

Main reason was the Image Quality, it had been widely reported that the guys at Tamron got it right with the 18-250, and they were correct.

I hope to do some travelling this weekend to take some city, country and night shots for comparitive shots with other lenses.

Hi there everybody,

A few weeks ago I purchased a K10D body in conjunction with the new Tamron 18mm - 250mm Di II zoom lens. I have been trying to find out what this camera can do when left to it's own devices, so here's a hand-held 10MP jpeg photo that was taken in full auto (green mode) at F 8.0 : 1/180 sec - ISO: 100 : focal length 70mm - image reduced 800 x 536 in P S Pro.

Great shots Richard, love that # 2. I think this lens is my new 'if I had to take only one lens on a trip..... ' lens. At least for outdoors and scenery. I will take it out in the country over the weekend and see what I can get it to do.

At what focal lengths does it change f stop?

i.e. to f4.0, to f4.5, to f5.6 and to f6.3

I have a Sigma 18-200 and am dissapointed when using it at 200mm.
Can you guys post a few 100% crops of the Tamron at 200 and 250 mm ?

Does anyone have both the Tamron and the Sigma to do a direct comparison at 200mm ?

You'll have to forgive me, but do you mean take the whole of an original photo (100%) and then resize the entire image to (200%) and then crop a small selected portion of the enlarged photo ? Sorry for appearing slightly dense and please excuse my slight 'confusion', but I've never done this before !

If so and according to your request, here is a smallish selected crop without any post processing (100% enlargement of original) from part of the 10MP jpeg photo, taken with my K10D and Tamron 18mm - 250mm Di II at the focal length of 250mm (apologies in advance for the less than wonderful image, but it's the only one I've shot at the range you requested):

Hi Richard

It's actually very easy to find out.

With the lens attached and the camera turned on, set to Av mode and max aperture at the wide end, then progressively zoom the lens and when the aperture in top LCD changes from f3.5 to f4.0 , push the info button and the focal length will be displayed on the rear screen, do the same when it changes to f4.5 etc.,

If you could do that I'd be obliged.

Intro don't have that information readily available.

Yes, that's what I meant. The reason why I ask this, is because I have a lot of trouble getting sharp pictures with the Sigma at 200mm. I first suspected that even the SR may not be good enough to stabilize my shaking hands, but I've had blurry pictures even with shutter speeds at 1/1000 sec (ISO 400).
