Sigma 10-20mm F/4-5.6

I am in the market for a good wide angle zoom to use with my K100D. Recently I've been thinking about getting the Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6. It fits into my price range, anyway. I was wondering what peoples opinions are on this Sigma 10-20mm. Or should I hold out for the Pentax DA 12-24mm. The 12-24 is quite bit more expensive than the Sigma 10-20mm, so I'd have to wait quite a while.

Both have good reviews, but the Sigma will be the wider of the two. The Pentax has a constant f4 aperture. The 10-17 fisheye is cheaper than either, and has a look all of its own - that some people don't like. Tough choices on a budget :-(

I was going to hold out for the 12-24 or even just grab the 14/2.8 but ended up getting the cheaper Sigma 10-20 and I don't regret it..

After many months of patient waiting, a few days ago I was FINALLY rewarded by becoming the proud owner of Sigma's extraordinary Pentax-fit 10-20mm wide-angle lens.
Before using this optic for the first time, I'd just like to offer two words of caution:

1) If the phrase "Oh My God" continuously keeps echoing around your head, you are most definitely not hearing voices !
2) When you can't prevent a stupid grin spreading across your face every time you look through the viewfinder with this lens attached, don't worry too much. It's a perfectly natural reaction and not some unfortunate physical affliction !

I don't have quite the same orgasmic reaction to using my Sigma 10-20mm that Richard does :-), but I am very pleased with it and have no regrets for having purchased it. (Understand that at my age..66..I don't have much of an orgasmic reaction to anything anymore. :-(

Hi Clem

You should bear in mind that I'm used to photographing with a 35mm f2.8 Zuiko perspective-correction lens on my old Olympus OM 35mm film camera and this is the nearest affordable digital equivalent I've currently found, with the exception of a C***n 5D F/F body & 24mm TSE lens, whose combined retail cost hovers around a ridiculous £2,500.00 sterling (approx US $5,000.00).

Orgasmic - No.
Extremely chuffed - you bet !!!

I'm afraid I haven't really had a chance to use this lens properly yet since it is so new, but when the weather improves and I eventually get a decent opportunity, I'll try to post a few shots for you.
In the meantime, there are quite literally hundreds of excellent images for you to view on the Flickr site featuring this lens.
Simply google Flickr and then type Sigma 10-20 in the 'search' box and you should find them all. Here are two links to some particularly dramatic images which appealed to me:

In my opinion the Sigma 10-20mm is not what I'd describe as an 'easy' lens. In order to fully exploit the true capabilities of this amazing optic, you may need to carefully re-evaluate how you compose shots with the 10-20mm, in order to do it and your photographs justice. It might even revolutionize the way that you perceive the scenery around you ?
