I think F/1.8-F/2.0 is the ideal aperture for the 30mm Sigma. The images are sharp, and the focus is good, and contrast is good. At F/1.4, I have more trouble getting sharp in focus photos, and the contrast isn't as good. This one is F/2.0 at 1/50th of a second, ISO1600, Pentax K-x. Austin, TX, 37th street stroll the other night. The longer I own this lens, the more I like it! I'm realizing that this lens can take some photos that no other APS-C lens can (except presumably the 31mm F/1.8). For awhile, I thought about getting the lighter 35mm F/2.4, but now I've decided to stick with the Sigma 30mm and the Pentax DA15mm as my main prime lenses, although I would like to eventually get a 50mm F/1.7, or even better, a 77mm F/1.8. I've also compared my Tamron 28-75mm with the Sigma 30mm F/1.4, and at F/2, the Sigma is sharper, and has better contrast than the Tamron at 28mm at F/2.8; both are superb stopped down to F/4.
Another one from the same walk, 1/25th, F/2.0, ISO1600
