One problem with AF on the wide end is that the subject field may be too target-rich, but I haven't really been bothered with this on my K20D, neither indoors nor outside. The cure is to select the center or other AF point, which also determines Focus Confirmation when manual focusing. I generally focus manually only for hyperfocus -- see this
Online Depth of Field Calculator. So at the wide end I'll set the aperture to f/5.6, prefocus to around 40cm / 16in, and have DOF from 20cm / 8in to infinity.
