DA 12-24 Availability

On my next LBA mission, I kind of have my mind set on the DA 12-24. Now when I start shopping at my regular vendors, I see this lens in not available at B&H and Adorama. At Amazon it is available from a 3rd party vendor, but at list price ($899.95). Also, it shows as available from the Pentax site at of course list price.

I hate paying list price since if it was available from B&H or Adorama it would be $700.

I did a forum search, and it seems this availability problem goes back through last year sometime.

So, just wondering why the availability of this lens has been so sparse for the past 6 months or so. I'd love to have it for the $700, but it doesn't look good.

My second choice would be the 15 limited, but I am thinking that the versatility of the zoom would be beneficial - my intentions for this lens would be strictly outdoor landscapes such as farms, barns, and interior forest scenes.

It was available on black friday but I guess it sold out again- it's just a popular guess and they can't keep up with it would be my guess.

Thanks for that info Adam - if that is the case I will try to be patient for a couple weeks and see if/when they come back in stock.

When I was shopping for an ultrawide the Pentax was out of stock. I picked the Tamron 10-24 as an alternate. I never had a chance to compare both lenses side by side, but I am happy with the Tamron's IQ, 2mm extra wideness, and price. Consider it if you can't find the Pentax.

I have been using the 12-24 and the 15 ltd, both are very nice. Maybe the 12-24 is in short supply because Pentax is coming up with a 12-24 WR or *, if so, it would be my must have and third most used lens after 16-50 and 55-300.

I was going to buy the lens but it was out of stock at B&H and Adorama this past two weeks. A WR version would be really nice.

Seems they are not as available in the UK as I thought. I ordered one but although a number of main dealer's advertised them as 'in stock' the first two I tried didn't actually have one.

Due to arrive today :0)

The older version of the sigma 10-20 is an amazing lens which I've had before, IMO even better than the newer version except for speed Those who would rather have the 10, it's a no brainer. It has excellent CA control as well. Check Photozone for the Pentax 12-24 and the older sigma 10-20 and the Sigma does very well. Because of the newer version it has dropped in price as well.

I had the 10-20 and sold it as I didn't use it much. Now, I want the 12-24 mostly for the 24. I feel like I will use the lens more if it's also a 24, as I fond that focal length the single best. It is frustrating to not be able to find any for a reasonable price....hope I can find one before my trip to Alaska in the beginning of May. If not a used one or another Sigma 10-20 (older version).

It would be nice if the new upcoming DA wide zoom was WR, but who knows.

i'm just happy I paid only $550 for mine back in 2010... Honestly I don't see this lens being worth the near $1,000 I'm seeing it being sold for!

In the past week I have been checking different online sources. B&H and Adorama still show out of stock. However, over the weekend, Adorama showed a used one for $639 I think - I hesitated and then it was gone the next day.

Amazon still shows one from a 3rd party vendor for list price, but Amazon Warehouse Deals had one for $768 over the weekend - that one is also gone now. Also, Amazon marketplace shows a used one for $810 from an unknown vendor.

But, I am happy to say, that I was lucky enough to grab one that came up on the Marketplace on Sunday - should be here by the weekend.

Why is it that when a lens is mostly unavailable, it makes you want it even more......that's real LBA in the works I think.
