SMC 67 Macro 4/135 on APS-C samples

Hi all, I am considering getting an adapter K to 67 lens to use my P67 Macro 4/135 on my K7 body. Does anyone have some sample shots of this combination to post? It could be very nice to see some in advance and compare to my other close-up/macro lenses. With my SMC K 2.5/135 I am limited by the minimum focus distance at 1.5 M. and with my SMC M Macro 4/50 at 0.234 M. I often come to close to the subject.
So the 67 Macro 4/135s minimum focus distance at 0.75 could be just right. Thank you, regards Jakob Trägårdh, Copenhagen

SMC K 2.5/135

SMC M Macro 4/50

I think the stats look like it could be an interesting and cheap (since I already own the lens) combination for macro/close-up work:

Pentax SMC 4/135 Macro (1989) w/ Adapter K to 6X7 Lens

APS-C
Crop Factor: 205,2 mm.
Diagonal FoV: 12.2 deg,
Horizontal FoV: 10.2 deg.

Magnification: X 0.32
Minimum Focus: 0.75 M.
Minimum Aperture: f:32
Diaphragm: Manual/Automatic switch, 8 blades

Weight: 620 g.
Diam x length: 91.5 x 95 mm.
Filter Size: 67 mm.
Optical Construction: 5 elements in 3 groups

The adapter cost about 60 US and ads about 3-4 cm to the length and 190 g. to the rig.

Speaking generally, a 6x7 lens may not have the resolution required for APS-C.
I have a vague recall (and no time right now to chase up the reference)
of tests someone did comparing medium format lenses with the M100/2.8,
and the M100/2.8 gave the best resolution.

But if you can locate a cheap adapter, you can check for yourself.
Please let us know what you find.

Why not just get extension tubes for the K135/2.5 it is a great lens and with a set of auto extension tubes you will get to 1:2

With the fast maximum aperture you will have a much brighter view finder than a 100mm F4 macro and the 135/2.5 is a great performing lens even wide open

I have the 67 Takumar 135 macro with a Pentax PK adapter. I aquired the lens for almost nothing. I also bagged an extension tube set for it. I have no decent examples I would care to show anyone. I used it for some utility snap shots only, hand held, table top. The lens review section has some input as to lens quality.

I can say this, the lens with adapter on the K20 becomes a hand full but the big lens is suprisingly light weight. The Pentax 67 to PK has no tripod mount possibilities for table top macro so a bean bag rest of some sort is very handy.. It all clears the K20 view finder forward protrusion just fine. I used it in primarily in bright daylight and tried briefly making a reflective flash defusor for the K20 built-in that didn't work that well as the long lens tends to shadow the flash without some bounce arrangement. If the lens and adapter etc is cheap, it is fun to play with. Probably not a set up for field macro because of the size. With the extension tubes it becomes a monster. Some of the cheap aftermarket 6x7 to PK adapters do have a tripod mount boss.
For knock around field use I prefer the low cost full frame Komine build PK mount 90MM f2.5/2.8 by Vivitar, Elicar, Panagor etc Not the ultimate lens but it works well as a knock around in a back pack. Just my 2 cents. Thanks

I meant to add that there are a good number of 6x7 Taky 135s available quite reasonable on FleaBay. It is not an expensive lens if one wanted to play with it.

If the SMC K 2.5/135 has a magnification of about x0.12 (my ruff estimate) and a minimum focus distance of 150 cm, then with a 25 mm. extension tube, it would have a magnification of about x0.3 and a minimum focus distance of about 76 cm. Almost exactly the same as the 67 lens. 8 blades. Min. Aperture of f:32. I would have to remount not to loose focus to infinity though. The 67 also has the manual/auto switch — I tend to forget the ‘green button‘ when using K and M lenses, and here in Denmark the light shift often — so I like that.

The SMC 67 Macro 4/135 is a (Pentax average) sharp and dedicated Macro lens (corrected for spherical aberration) with x0.32 magnification. Especially at the center it has very good to excellent sharpness through all apertures. The K lens is sharper still and a stop brighter though.

Heck, maybe I should get both an adapter and a 25 mm. extension tube and have fun comparing the results and sharing them with you guys.

Thank´s for the replies to you all

Should be interesting to see.
For macro in that sort of range,
I'm just using a Voigtlaender 90/3.5 with its close-up lens at the moment,
so I'm curious about the alternatives.
100% crops at the edge of the APS-C frame would be critical.

I'm planning to do a review of the Voigtlaender 90/3.5 soon, including a macro sample.
(Just completed an M200/4 review this week.)

Here is a preview of the angle of view with a 67 Macro 4/136 mm lens on a 67, a FF and an APS-C Camera.

Same photo from flickr in the medium size, where I found it — Thank´s to D. Sevilla, 2008
