Can this be fixed?

I found this online for a great price and was wondering if it repairable?
Any ideas if a lens hood would mount on it as is?
How much would this decrease the value?

Any opinions welcome

Thanks

Randy

I would guess the lens hood would still work but I would ask to be sure. Can it be fixed? I would think CRIS could repair it but not sure of the cost. I doubt it will affect the useability but it certainly affects the resale value.

The question in my mind is what other damage the lens may have suffered.

To me, it looks like the bayonet hood may not clip properly (the hood might have taken the fall) but screw-in hood should work. Jatrax already made sense on other things.

Randy, just looked at mine and that missing section shouldn't affect anything. That little "boxed" area immediately to the right of the void is how the hood secures to the lens. The missing piece is an empty space and how the notches on the hood clear the notches on the lens to mount and reverse the hood.

As for value, I would venture a guess that it would take off $50-75 since the hood should still be fully functional

Edit: My guess is it could be fixed, but I can't see it coming in at under $200

That damage suggests a possible drop/hard knock against the lens. I would be wary of not being able to examine its performance before pulling the trigger. If all else fails, make sure you get a good return policy.

Of course, sandwich rule applies.

Happy hunting! ^_^

+1 to those thoughts. Drops can misalign lenses and cause other damage that is not immediately apparent. Good luck.

My thoughts as well. Way back when I was first getting into photography, my mentor advised me that there is one cardinal rule to buying used gear.
Avoid a camera or lens that has evidence of having been dropped.
A blow that was hard enough to break or bend the outside may have also done serious damage to the inside. In the old days this often meant full length cracks running through the metal of the focus helicoid or derailed aperture blades. Imagine the same type of damage on a modern lens, but with the addition of the AF mechanism.

That being said, if the price is low and the seller is willing to to sell with your right to return if additional defect is found and if the lens is repairable...
