Which UV Filter?

I just bought a couple of lenses through the marketplace here and was just going to buy the cheapest UV filters to protect them. I mean the UV filter is just a coated piece of glass, right? Then I started reading the reviews on amazon.com and thought I cruise back here and ask if the quality/brand of of a simple UV filter matters...

I discovered last month that my Hoya filter (UV (O) ?) causes flaring, or maybe some other artifact whose name I do not know. I had pictures with and without. If I can find them, I'll post them for reference (and if I can't, I'll just take new ones). Also, I"ll edit in exactly which filter I have.

If you decide to get a UV filter for your precious lenses, do get the high quality ones. There is nothing worse than to use a cheap filter on a nice glass. The IQ degradation and glare are definitely more pronounce with cheap filters. It also depends the value of glass you want to protect. If it's not worth it to spend around 40-50 for a filter, then don't.

Dont bother with uv filters at all. You are introducing something that can lead to flare or image degradation. Digital cameras do not need a UV/Skylight like film did.

Make sure you always use a lens hood which will prevent flare and offer some protection to the lens fron element.

if you do insist on using a filter...get the best you can afford ! Would you have bought the lens in the first place if the specification read " .....we have used the finest ground glass elements in our lens but to keep costs down we have made the front element out of cheap second hand filter glass" I think you get my point.

This makes a world of sense... thanks for your clarity... I don't shoot in Iraq and I come in out of the rain... I'll skip the filter and use a lens hood...

+1 On all my lenses. My rule is don't buy cheap glass, and don't put cheap filters on the good glass. Cheaper/easier to clean/replace a filter than a lens.
