Jupiter-9 owners (or anybody) please provide some CC on these images
and bestow some J-9 knowledge at your convenience.

I don't know how the heck I'm supposed to set the aperture on this thing.





There are F-stops marked on the barrel, to be sure, but the ring that closes
the diaphram is just smooth - no clicking, no 'stops'. And there's no way of
knowing what's going on with the blades unless I turn the thing around
and actually look at the blades closing through the front of the lens.

What the ........?

Anyway, I literally only had minutes this afternoon to take some shots before
I had to get back inside, so I can't judge anything really yet, but I'll say what
I've seen so far - 1) super-duper soft wide open, 2) fools the diopter, need to
focus a tiny bit 'into' the green hexagon to hit perfect focus, 3) 'weirdness'
with bokeh/colors that just might be pretty cool, and 4) very very sharp
when stopped down... to... something.

Let me know what to do with aperture, what you thing of the images, and
please post some images if you have a J-9 so I can know what to expect.

I have an earlier version of this lens but it should be mechanically almost identical to your newer generation of the Jupiter 9 in terms of operation.

In any case, it's a "preset aperture" lens. That means you open the aperture up to wide open, then turn the outermost (forward ring) to the aperture you want "fixed." Then you turn the second aperture ring to move the aperture blades to whatever fixed aperture you've selected. If you select f/2 for the fixed aperture then you won't be able to stop the lens down. If you select f/8 then you can smoothly turn the aperture ring from f/2 to f/8 and the ring will stop at f/8 (so you can't go past f/8).

If it makes you feel any better, I usually just leave the preset all the way at f/16 and then shoot "somewhere" between wide open and f/16 (depending on lighting conditions). I almost never use the preset aperture dial.

Actually, it is pretty neat. That's the first thing I thought of, 'I can make it
any aperture fraction I want!?! Whaaaa...?" Aperture then becomes as
adjustable as focus. Weird, but.....cool.

Thanks on the compliment. The cat shot reminds me very much of what my
77ltd does in that situation, same sort of bokeh/depth fade. Very nice effects.

The lens itself smells like a refinery (strong oil smell) but is well built and, I think,
looks pretty cool. Focus action is well dampened but smooth. Think I'm going
to like this baby.

I've got a 135mm F2.8 with a preset aperature and once you get used to it they are great to use. Preset your aperature and meter, flick the other ring to wide open, focus, then flick the ring back again to stop down and shoot. Much easier to use quickly than a regular single aperature ring once you have some practice.

Plenty of old lenses are like that. Looking at my shelve I got three atleast at the moment. The helios 44-2 and two Meyers. The meyers isn't even preset.

Actually I prefer to work with M42 lens than a K mount "M" lens. And if the lens has a preset aperture it is even better. It just takes a little time to get used to.
I have attached an M42 adapter (with the locking pin removed) on my most used M42 lenses, this way it is easier to mount the lens when in a hurry.

Yea I have the older J9 with the preset aperture. Its sharpness is a real surprise.



K100D @ ISO 3200. Aperture I can't remember. F2 or F2.8. A slight crop off the bottom to remove the edge of some rock.

Glad to see that you finally received your J-9! Looks like you are putting it to some good use too! Out of curiosity, where did you buy it and if new, what was the condition of the lens on receipt? Mine (bought from and shipped by rugift.com) was very poorly packed (two sheets of crumpled newspaper), was loose in the shipping box with no caps front or rear, and was covered in dust and some sort of sooty material.

Post some more picture and your impressions when you get a chance.
