some wide angle tests

i didnt bother hiding the exif info so if you peek you're going to ruin the conclusions/opinions for yourself.

and if you do peak dont post numbers, names or anything incriminating, just post your opinion on the image

simply state which images you think are more pleasing to the eye or whatever,

first set,

1. (original http://fork.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p930737119.jpg)

this is an interesting exercise in pixel peeping and so i downloaded the full size files to check

between 3 and 4 there's hardly any difference

to me the real comparison is between 5 and 6 and 5 totally smokes 6. the white bricks on the bottom right corner are sharper, the trees off to the distance are sharper. 6 seems to be a washed out over all, not sure if maybe a better hood would make a difference?

i hope #6 isn't what i'm thinking it is ...

Same here, there's a little more punch and contrast in those. The only one that really stands out is 6 due to barrel distortion.

anyway

1, 4, and 5 are the sigma 10-20 @ 20mm slightly cropped

2, 3 and 6 are the DA21 Limited

conclusion? DA21 is up for sale... since i want to buy a DA*16-50, which i know is going to be better than the sigma, and since the sigma can easily compete with the DA21, there is no point other than bragging rights of keeping this lens.

(well that and its size, but that sort of thing never bothered me)

also it seems the sigma exhibites less barrel distortions throughout the image... which to me is actualy kind of surprising considering the target market of the DA21...

the DA21 is definitely a compromise lens
it's not fast, not bleedingly sharp, has barrel distortion but the small size in itself is extremely advantageous. but the lens does perform pretty well, just maybe the Sigma is better.

although i find i'm shooting less and less wide angle and using my FA31 a lot more, i'm not sure if i'll the DA21 whenever i need the wide option.

i did some quick snaps outside to see how my sample looks (edit: of the DA21)

i dont have the FA31, but if its anything like the 43 then i would take it over the 21 any day.

if the DA21 was 2.0 and as sharp as the FA limiteds it would be a dominant lens, but i realized that i read into too much hype over on dpreview with regards to this lens (it, along with the 43 were my first lens purchases)

now i'm just waiting for that Tokina (or Tamron?) 10-24 or 11-24 or something, i wonder how thats going to be.
