Getting in on the M42 fun: Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2

My original Pentax k-mount to M42 adapter finally arrived so I can get in on the M42 fun. Took out my Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2 yesterday. I think it looks pretty good and it's a pleasure to use, the throw on the focus ring is nicely damped and just right for quick mf.

Pepijn, those photos are great! This lens is fun, I've got one too (you have two different versions I saw).

BTW: I visited your PPG and you have some great photos there too! Especially the B&W dune photos are marvelous IMO!

Thanks

My 44M-4 is better than the 44-2. I think the 44M has a better coating and is a little sharper. To be able to use the aperture ring on 44M you have to superglue the extending aperture pin down though.

Thank you for the info. I did not superglue the aperture pin, but I used a 2mm piece of plastic tube from a electricity wire. Works very fine!

PS: probably you should post your photos slightly bigger, so they will be better to judge...

You're right, upped the size.

Hmmm, my 44M (# 8032177) has an A-M switch, no need to superglue the pin. Green Button on Manual on the K20D doesn't stop it down, but the presets work fine.

Mine has no switch.

Two more shots, I'm quite enjoying this lens

My 44-2 can beat the K10D sensor. But maybe there's a difference on the K20D. I'm sure the coating is better though.

But I just love the pre-set aperture. Stepless aperture!

Thanks guys

The 44-2 I have is noticeably worse than the 44M-4
I will also try to find an MC version.

Agnostic, very nice and sharp pictures!

I have Helios 44M-4 58mm f/2 too and I love this old lens!!! Long time ago my dad bought Zenit CD12 which came with this lens. For more than 15 years, it was collecting dust in the storage room.
And now I am using it with my Pentax K-m! I call it "Blast from the past" I am shocked!!!!!!

Here is my first attempt at using it:

and finally my Photo-Evolution:

(taken with cell"Nokia N82")
