S-M-C Takumar 1000mm f/8

So, uh... I may have just done a very foolish thing.

Was cruising eBay tonight (yes, the beginning of all bank account-crippling stories...) and came across this auction:

PENTAX ASAHI TAKUMAR 500mm TELEPHOTO LENS MUST SEE !! - eBay (item 270448120945 end time Aug-26-09 22:26:56 PDT)

Of course, the first thing I noticed was that the listing said 500mm f/4.5, while the pics clearly show a S-M-C 1000mm f/8.

I sent the seller a question asking for clarification on the lens identity and the condition of the internal elements, but then I got to thinking...

If I wait for the seller to respond, there's a pretty good chance someone else is going to take a gamble and snap it up. And even if it is the 500mm f/4.5, that's a pretty damn good price (especially w/ Bing cashback, etc). And on the off chance it's really the S-M-C 1000mm f/8... well... what a deal!

So I jumped.

LBA, story of my life.

can't believe that.... Now it's your turn, to shell out real money: you'll need a very massive tripod and head to put that lens to good use!

I think for now I'm gonna find a really big rock. Or possibly use the roof of my car, if it'll bear the weight. :P

Don't forget the cost of hiring the Sherpas to carry the lense & tripod.....

That's a smoking deal no matter what. It's clearly the 1000mm and even going from the length listed. I had the 500mm and it's shorter than 31". Plus the 500's did not come with the steel cases.

I think the last one I saw sell in this shape with the case went for over $1000. So you did well. Of course the money you saved will go into the tripod. You everyday tripod can't hold this steady and the best way to use it is with a gimbal head.

LBA over CBA starts.....

I'm gonna go ahead and make a vow that if I end up reselling it here on the marketplace it'll be substantially below market value (if market value is anything like what Peter indicates).

Wish it came with one of the wooden tripods they originally came with!

Here's a question, though...

I just bought a Kenko 1.5x TC (K-mount, obviously). Can this lens be coupled with a K-mount TC if it's wearing a M42->K-Mount adapter?

LENS MEASURES APPROX 31” INCHES END TO END.

TRIPOD RECOMMENDED

The fellow certainly has a God-given talent when it comes to understatement, doesn't he? "Recommended", indeed.....
