I have a FA28-105 that I am happy with generally but a maddening problem is that it sometimes hunts and/or refuses to focus even in bright sunshine unlike other lenses I own. Why would this be? The focus sensor and focus motor are in the camera body (I have a K7). Can anyone shed any light on this annoying problem?

If you try to focus on a smooth, untextured, evenly lit surface any lens will hunt as would a person trying to focus manually.
Could that be your problem?

Zooming the lens to its longest focal length might help.

Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the problem. This lens is noticably harder to lock into focus than say my DA18-55 F4-5.6 or DA15 F4 - or even my F80-200 F4.7-5.6.

Trouble is it is an intermittent problem that strikes seemingly without rhyme or reason.
