Discontinued Lens List

It is interesting that these lenses are on this list. Well, not the 16-45mm, 50-200mm, or 18-55mm, but I had no idea of the others getting the boot.
  • smcp-DA 16-45/4 ED AL
  • smcp-DA 14/2.8 ED IF
  • smcp-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL
  • smcp-D FA Macro 50mm F2.8
  • smcp-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8
  • smcp-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited
  • smcp-DA 50-200mm F4.0-5.6 ED
  • smcp-DA 12-24mm F4.0 ED AL [IF]
  • smcp-DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 ED[IF]
  • smcp-DA 21mm F3.2AL Limited
Thank you
Russell

Interesting list!

I thought through many previous threads that the Pentax DA 18-250 was discontinued also.

Also on that list it appears that the Pentax *istDL is not discontinued, yet!

I do not understand the direction Pentax is going here? I do not see any replacements being announced yet, and what would the replacements be SDM and/or WR lenses with the same FL or same design just updated?

What is the replacement strategy?

* smcp-DA 16-45/4 ED AL essentially replaced with the DA*16-50/2.8
* smcp-DA 14/2.8 ED IF replace with the DA 15/5 Ltd
* smcp-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL replaced with the WR version and is the AL the plastic lens mount version??
* smcp-D FA Macro 50mm F2.8
* smcp-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8
* smcp-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited
* smcp-DA 50-200mm F4.0-5.6 ED replaced with the DA 60-250/4 and/or DA 55-300
* smcp-DA 12-24mm F4.0 ED AL [IF] replace with the Tokina 11-26/2.8 ??
* smcp-DA Fish-Eye 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 ED[IF] - this was a pretty unique design with Tokina
* smcp-DA 21mm F3.2AL Limited

In terms of the Limited replacements - I just do not see where they are going? Is this an attempt to clear the inventory in anticipation of a slew of new lenses to be announced early next year at some up coming show? Also, I do not see any shelf clearing price reductions other than the ones associated with the purchase of a body.

Well this is odd, very odd. They are either introducing WR versions of most of those lenses or we're beng shut down.

If you check out the link, you'll see it isn't really a list of discontinued lenses. It says, "historical and discontinued products", and appears to list almost every single product that had ever been in production up to 2 years ago, when the list appears to have been most recently updated. For the items that are discontinued, there is a specific "discontinued date" given. None of the aforementioned lenses are in that category - there is no discontinued date given for them. So there is no reason to read thi page as saying those lenses have been discontinued.

The top of the list states the dates the lenses were discontinued, but, for DA lenses, it states the date the lenses were introduced.

There is not a single lens on that list with a discontinued date by it - neither DA nor any other. It is the cameras that have specific discontinued dates by them. And the most recently discontinued product according to this list: the K110D, discontinued over a year ago. The K100D (both super and original) show as still in production, as does the *istDL. The most recent update of any kind to this list was July 2008. Does anyone really think the DA40 was discontinued in July 2008?

Again, there is just no way one should be interpreting this as an up-to-date list of discontinued products. It's really rather unclear what it is, really, but not worth worrying about.

Dam Pentax, they are soo lazy. The DA*60-250 and the DA15ltd, they are not even introduced yet. On the other hand, they still produce the K-m and the K-20D, so they have four bodies in production now...or? ... Forget about the DA's the A*400/2.8 must still be in production since it has only one date for when it was introduced...I want one!!! Wait, they haven't yet introduced the K-7 and the K-x, that is so lame...ehhh...they haven't even introduced the K20-D yet!? Wait a little, I have the DA15ltd and the K-7, this must be wrong, or is it only in Canada that Pentax are this much behind???

Don't they teach how to look with a critical eye on (dis)information sources in school any longer? You can't even trust everything that is printed, not everything that are on TV, and definitely not everything that are published (with a key stroke) and forgotten on the web!

Note that this is the Pentax Canada Web site. The gold standard is Pentax Japan where all sorts of stuff is on the active list that have been unavailable in North America for years:
Interchangeable Lenses : Digital Cameras : Imaging Systems Division : PENTAX
Note that the camera section of the same site lists both the 67II and 645NII medium format film cameras. Things are definitely different in the home market

haha, I couldn't resist checking out dpreview, of course to find the same silly post there. Obviously a poorly kept 'back of your closet' type page that someone at Pentax Canada thought, at some point would be a great reference. Then, like all other business projects it pushed aside for something newer, to be left for some sky is falling type to search out to proclaim the end is near! I think it is immediately obvious the list is grossly incomplete, and doesn't even reference any of those lenses being discontinued (but rather only an introduction date, as has been pointed out). It is also fun to see the difference between the reaction here and at dpreview - seems like over on the other forum it is practically factual (with the exception of Marc of course!)

If you have a good dealer in your home country I think you can get most of that stuff ordered from Japan. One of the Swedish sellers I use frequently delivered me the SMC Pentax-A 2x-S converter earlier this year new from Japan. Definitely not in production any longer, but still in stock in the mother company.

ha ha ha! I just laughed so hard I nearly wet myself!

Oh wait - you were serious - sorry, there are no real camera stores within 250 miles of here that carry Pentax. Well, there is Samy's which could be considered a real camera store, but their idea of carrying Pentax is to list them on their web site, and to tell you in store that Pentax is almost a dead company. They will then try to sell you a Canon.
