NYC Visitors or Locals: Adorama has a lens on display you've -got- to see ....

SMC Takumar 6x7 800mm f/4 Lens. What a tremendous hunk of glass!!!! They also have the [ahem] 'little' brother, 600mm f/4 on display too, also 6x7. I believe the long 6x7's are very desirable. [?] Probably the 4 lens in 4 group formula, like the 500/4.5. Actually, desertscape left a good balanced review of the 600/4. Anyway, I never thought I'd consider 600/4 small, but when you see it in close proximity to the 800/4, medium format not 35mm no less, you'll understand.

It does come w/the K-mount adapter, so it can be considered a SLR lens, right? I figured more people will see this in the SLR Lens section. With that said, modz, if you think this belongs in the Medium Format section, please go ahead and move it. If so hope you'll do so w/o feeling the need to issue me "one demerit".

I couldn't get a 'real' price on it, but the gentleman up front said "offer me $50,000 and we can start talking... " I responded "Seriously? That's a bit much, it'll never sell... how can you let such a marvelous piece just sit and collect dust? Don't you want the money a real price will bring?" He responded "It's great advertising. I can't buy better advertising with that money. If you walk in to my store, you'll remember Adorama after seeing that lens." Well. ok. maybe. At least this way I get the fawn all over it. lol. If you're in the area, stop in. I doubt you can do so w/o saying 'WOW' or equivalent.

p.s. They're not listing it in their used equipment section either. So if you go look for it there, you won't find it.

You know, there are these things called *cameras* that you can use to take very realisitic pictures, which then you can share with people on the internets and stuff to really get your point across. Have you heard of it?

J/K, I'd love to go take a look though. Next time I'm in NYC, I'll try to head on over there. Probably around New Years :-)

I know, I know. I had my big long lens mounted on the camera and I was too lazy to change lenses before going out this afternoon to take the camera w/me. I was supposed to be heading back out to LI tonight. But my brother called me this afternoon to tell me the next door neighbor my age I grew-up with just died suddenly. So I decided to say in NYC another night to more easily attend the wake in NJ tomorrow. I hope to head over to Adorama before doing all that and snap some shots.

p.s. but do you really want me to take the surprise away of when you see it in person by me posting a pic?

With a person in frame for reference...

vs. the 6x7 600/4

That's the 600/4 on the left, top shelf.... see? Looks kind'a small next to the 800/4, doesn't it?!

Good? Oh yes, and it weighs 45 lbs.

Looks a little shorter than my (now someone else's) SMC Tak 1000/8, but a lot heavier and fatter.

I guess you could borrow someone's shoulder to take street shots with that piece of glass.

800mm f/4!

Considering how BIG and EXPENSIVE the Canon 800mm f/5.6 is (~$12000)...A whole stop faster! No AF, but IS (I guess?) on a Pentax body

That is incredible. I didn't know this existed. I wonder if anyone has any idea what this was selling for new?

I have to laugh that it's mounted on a bellows. That is one smokin macro lens. I wonder if the rails can support the weight.

PS did they have much new Pentax available to sell?

The had the K-7, K-x, White K-x, and W80 on display; maybe some other p&s too, but I didn't look for it and didn't notice beyond the W80. I've been thinking about picking one of them up so didn't look past that.

I didin't notice any new lenses out in the display but they'll bring anything they have up front as anywhere else; what they stock is avail online.

They had some prime used glass on display. I was handling a FA* 300mm f/2.8; it seemed to have had a pretty full maybe even hard life. They also had a 600mm f/5.6 out. I think the Sigma 300mm f/2.8 out was K mount, but I can't find that online to confirm.

Indeed. The IS will work from what I've read on another photo forum (800mm is the highest you can set it). Altho when you are on a tripod you're not supposed to leave IS on anyway, so it may or maynot help. I guess it's as long as the oscillation isn't too high a frequency, the IS can cope. And yes, I'd expect the 45lb block would oscillate pretty slowly.
