Does your Pentax-m 50mm/1.4, 50mm/1.7 rattle

I picked up my beatup M-fifties today and notice a bit of a rattle when I shake it.

Is it normal?

I know this happens with Takumars when one of the three screws holding the optical block become loose. Is the M-Series similar in construction?

There's a normal amount of rattle in the aperture mechanism. It can be reduced by holding the aperture lever when you're shaking. The mechanism on screw-mount Takumars either doesn't move as much, or noises are better contained within the screw mount.

I bought my M 50/1.4 new in 1982. It was the first lens I bought for my first 35mm SLR, a Pentax MX. It has always had a bit of a rattle in it. I suspect it is a bit of loose play in the aperture mechanism as suggested above.

It can be a little annoying but it has had no effect on image making in the 28 years I have had this lens. I don't think it is a cause for concern.

Mine rattles, too. When I hold the aperture lever to wide open, no rattles whatsoever...

Yep! My M 50/1.7 rattles when off the camera and did so even when new. Silent, when mounted. This is a fairly well-documented characteristic of the lens and a fairly frequent question from new owners.

Yep. Doesn't effect its performance though.
