Best kit lens replacement without SDM?

It seems that the DA* 16-50mm may well be the optically best kit zoom replacement. However, the current perceived state of SDM - no matter how wide-spread the problem really is after all - makes me want to definitely avoid SDM lenses for now. So, what is the optically best alternative in K mount and with AF?

Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 Di II?
Pentax DA 16-45mm?

Tamron 17-50 and DA16-45 have very strong following. So does Sigma 18-50/2.8 The original (non macro) version. I've read a lot of praise on it.

So those three are direct replacements IMO.
If you don't mind getting 2 lenses (Ultra wide - moderate wide & moderate wide - short tele)
Then Sigmas 10-20 + 24-60/70 or Tamrons 10-24 + 28-75 do seem very viable options.

DA*16-50 has both SDM af and screw drive af. If SDM fails... then use the screw drive AF

You would also be losing weather sealing (maybe it's not important to you though).

But I thought that's not possible with the newer camera bodies? Unless one fries the connectors as Peter Zack did accidentally.

Sigma 17-70, Tamron 17-50 and the DA16-45 are all good replacements for the standard lens.
I have used the Sigma 17-70/2.8-4.5 a lot and liked it very much. Recently purchased the DA 16-45/4.0 and the 16 mm is very nice to have. So i guess it depends on your preferences and in general I think that the standard lens is quite good. So if you decide to purchase another lens then take a look at the benefits of those lenses. F2.8 for the Tamron or more wide angle for the DA 16-45.

If you want a very sharp lens at F2.8 you might even consider the Tamron 28-75/2.8. Still is one of my favorites.

Best regards,
Jan Rinze.

I chose the Tamron, but really much prefer a good prime. A20 or 24...FA28 or 35, and all of the LTD lenses suit me much better than any zoom.

That's right emr. Which is why I chose the Pentax DA 16-45. I am very happy with it.

To flash1100

You have owned both DA 16-45mm and Tammy 28-75mm. Which one did you prefer in terms IQ and color rendition? Thanks

Is there a published "hack" to cover connector(s) so that SDM fails over to screw drive?
