Pentax K-7 video versus Canon T2i

I want to get one of these two cameras. I own the k-x and really like it. I also like the T2i and have read that it's video is excellent. But it lacks other things I want like weather resistance, body doesn't seem as nicely constructed from what I can read, and some other stuff. For the price, the T2i seems a bit overpriced or maybe the K-7 seems a bargain. I don't know.

Anyway, can anyone tell me why the T2i is supposed to be so much better than the K-7? They both have 1080p video and the same sensor.

As far as build quality is concerned, the k-7 is in a different league than the plasticky t2i. The k-7 is a MUCH nicer build quality. Camera specs wise, the K-7 edges out and is definitely the better camera far and away.

Video, however, is a different story. The t2i runs circles around the k-7 for video. The k-7 does NOT shoot full 1080p...only 720p.

Reasons the t2i is better for video:
-full manual control
-24p, 30p, and 60p frame rates
-1080p
-custom audio
-far less noise in video

I'm heartily unimpressed with the Pentax's camera ability to handle noise in low light in video...the Canons just walk away at that point.

Hope this helps!

60p is for 720p not 1080p. There are no DSLRs that do 1080p @ 60FPS. I use a Panasonic HDC-TM700 3MOS camcorder that does 1080p @60FPS and has a F1.5 Leica zoom lens that zooms from 35-630mm (35mm eqiv).

Frame capture from a 1080p60 video I shot the other day:

That is an amazing looking picture (to me anyway). What i you did 1080p at 30fps? Wouldn't the picture be just as good? Or I guess it's because it's 1080p that you were able to get such a great still from the frame capture.

That's a nice shot (still) from a video. But it's a nice shot made in bright light. How does it look with settings as iso3200

This is made with the K-7. To notice it's a shot with the DA*55mm set at f1.4 iso3200 and (probably) 1/50 second (or the longer 1/30st if that is the limit). So there is no extra possability for making it better within the camera. Technical stretcht to te limit.

In bright light it's much more easy to make movies.

I own both a K-7 and a T2i. For photos, I like the colors and all the controls of the K-7 better, but I think the T2i is less noisy; I prefer the K-7 in this case. For videos, the T2i beats the K-7, hands down. First off, the T2i has manual control in video, something the K-7 doesn't. Second, you can do 1080p/30fps and 720p/60fps on the T2i; the K-7 has some strange max resolution, and is limited to 30 fps. Third, I'm finding the IQ of the T2i's video much better than the K-7; the K-7's video IQ seems to be not as crisp as the T2i.

Here's a video I recently made using both the K-7 and the T2i. If you look carefully, you should be able to tell which clip was taken with which camera (hint; the slow motion is somewhat jerky with the K-7, as I had to interpolate frames to get the slow-mo effect):

To summarize, if you're going to do video, get the T2i.

I don't know how important video sound is to you, but isn't there a major annoyance with the T2i/550D regarding recorded sound? Like you can't have the audio input at an absolute level, but it rather pumps up the background noise if there's no content (automatic gain control?). Don't know all the details, but Google's your friend. I also don't know if K-7 is any better in this way.

Stop this "60FPS" bullshit! The T2i shoots 1080p at 30FPS.

I would also SERIOUSLY consider if you want 1080P video! It takes up a LOT of space on your SD card, takes a reasonably powerful computer to edit, and not that many video hosts actually have proper 1080p support (youtube has pretty crappy quality IMO). Even if you do upload it, the average user doesn't really have proper bandwidth for 1080p streaming.

That said, the T2i is better than the K7 for video. Because it has manual controls mostly. Besides that, the K7 isn't much worse. The K7 is much better in all other aspects IMO.

You are correct, sir. I amended my previous post. But the T2i DOES shoot 60fps, just at 720p.

The K-7 doesn't have any sort of DIRECT Manual ISO and Shutter control but it can still be controlled.

The sticky in this section highlights how to do it.

There is a massive difference shooting at 100 Iso and 1600 on the K-7, the noise difference is night and day.

I have only shot in 1080p @60fps with my Panasonic HDC-TM700. Yes still mode would be just as good but I shoot 1080p60 99.999% of the time.

Editing 1080p videos do need a rather fast computer, and you stuck with the H.264 compression, which is even harder to edit (more CPU is needed for decompressing the frames). Sometimes even editing (coloring, etc.) the 720p source takes a lot of time.
Anyways, T2i is better for having manual controls. I like the IQ of the K7 better, I don't like the harsh look the T2i gives. But that's just my opinion.
