Pentax K-5 Test Run

I recorded some random video clips from my rental K-5, and compiled it into a short video.

Overall, I'm okay with the K-5's video performance. I'm still not happy about the lack of manual control, but I can live with the 30p max frame-rate at 720p.

Great looking video, how does it compare to videos shot with your T2i ? If the K-5 does not drop in price soon I plan on getting the 60D to shoot HD video with since it has features not available on any other DSLR like articulated 1mp 3" LCD, manual control of audio and video with 1080p30/25/24 , 720p 60 etc. I have seen the 60D for as low as $849 and that is a much better deal than the K-5 for HD video IMHO.

I still prefer video out of my T2i for several reasons.

First, it's so much easier to get the look I want using manual video control. I have having to remember to press the AE-L button to lock the exposure to what I originally wanted; it gets very annoying when I switch back and forth from playback to record and have to re-do my exposure.

Second, I'm still a fan of 60p, mainly so I can slow the motion down. By conforming 60p down to 24p, I get around a 2.5x slowdown effect, which can be neat at times. Plus, it makes super slow-mo (via Twixtor) look that much nicer.

Third, H.264 is easier to work with in FCP than MJPEG. I end up converting videos from either format into ProRes 422 HQ. The difference is that I can import the H.264 stuff directly into FCP then use the Media Manager to convert, versus having to do it via a third-party program with MJPEG.

Don't get me wrong; I'm still getting a K-5, mainly for stills and poor-weather conditions. However, the lack of manual video control compels me to hold onto my T2i. If Pentax's engineers can hurry up and add this feature to the K-5, I'd keep the K-5 exclusively. The act of recording during the rain in this video has got me wanting to do it more.
