I finally did it! Jumping spider eating focus stacked :D
Camera: K-7
Posted By: yeatzee, 05-12-2010, 09:38 PM

I decided to take two shots during a quick shoot of a jumping spider that could be possibly stacked if I ever grew the courage to try it

Well as soon as I was done I ended up getting straight to it and here are my first results! This shot isn't very good in its own right, but it still is very significant to me. This opens up a whole new realm This is two jpegs (shoot RAW +) quickly thrown together with a quick run through in gimp. Total time = 3 min. im sure the RAW processed shots will come out much better but I could not wait

Let me know what you think!

I'm no macro shooter, but it does look like you have a fair bit of DoF there, so I say well done.
Look forward to seeing what else you can do too.

Nice shot. You know what your doing...
But stay with Pentax even if the flies come around. We know you can capture them. Seriously.

Believe me I DO NOT want to switch to another brand.... but I may be driven to run dual system. To get this shot I had to hold the K-7 (670grams) + M 50mm (185grams) + sigma 105mm macro (457grams) with one hand @ ~2:1 and move just a couple mm forwards and take another shot without moving side to side to stack the shot! This was because my other hand was busy hold the speedlight right ontop of the back element of the M 50mm (it was reversed on the sigma). Its crazy frustrating believe me. Than I look over at canon and their macro machine and macro flash and I become VERY envious.

I took a quick video because I got a lot of questions about my setup on other forums. YES I KNOW I NEED A HAIR CUT! YES I KNOW ITS REAR ELEMENT NOT FRONT! YES I KNOW IM WEARING A LAME FENDER SHIRT DESPITE THE FACT THAT I LIKE GIBSON MUCH MORE....

(it was shot indoors so I wouldn't loose the little guy attempting focus stacking for the very first time.)

I got a quick video of the little guy also.... excuse the shakiness, it was handheld with no where to rest my arms. Wind wasn't helping either..

Jumping spider (attempt at a video handheld, with wind invlolved) on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Get a hair cut! ( I had to say it )

2nd shot if I had to choose.

So you just layered the 2 together in gimp?

I want to try this someday ( focus stacking ) but haven't really researched much yet. Always wanting more DOF in shots like this.

Thanks for posting the video and such. Great job!
