Saturday afternoon, we had a great time sailing Galveston Bay under a very blue sky and very hot sun. Here's a group of pics I grabbed of folks enjoying nautical activities.

Hey, thanks, my friend. The "sailboat eater" does look formidable, indeed - but it's pretty benign. It's owned and run by Landry's Kemah Boardwalk, and the professional skippers are very respectful of sailboats.

Yikes! That main and head sail on that sailboat cost some SERIOUS bucks. A light wind racer for sure.

I appreciate it. The sails are laminates of polyester film and very high modulus synthetic fibers with highly ordered crystalline orientations (I'm a retired organic chemist/polymer scientist so I'm as interested in the materials as in the boat). These sails can be shaped perfectly in the sail loft and - because of the stiffness of the fibers and fabric - will retain that perfect foil shape without stretching that you see in a conventional Dacron sail (like ours). Also, strength is accompanied by light weight, so these sail contribute to lowering the center of gravity, reducing heel and thus increasing speed. These suckers are very expensive and rarely used on cruising boats like my wife and I sail.

A quick comment from the off-the-beach catamaran world. I'm a bit out of date with the latest fabrics. Kevlar mylar combinations are about as far as I go. Carbon fibre masts, of course. One popular material for the less financially endowed is Pentex, a polyethylene naphthalate material. It works fine with the size of sails used in the A Class.
