At the Zoo with a K-5 & K-x
Lens: various Camera: K-5, K-x Photo Location: San Diego Zoo/Safari Park
Posted By: einstrigger, 12-08-2010, 10:30 AM

For a brief weekend of bliss, I had my grubby hands on a K-5 and decided to take it for a test drive at the San Diego Zoo. Most of the time, I had the DA-L 55-300mm (the one that comes with the K-x) and I was very impressed considering I hardly every used that lens in the past. In addition, I finally taught my wife how to focus lock and recompose, so she had a blast going through the park with the K-x and the DA 18-250mm.

Without looking at the exif, see if you can guess which photos were from the K-5 vs. the K-x

Thanks for looking!

Thanks everyone. The giraffes seem to get the most comments from my friends and family as well, I'm guessing because of the symmetry(?) of them all lined in a row. I don't know how to describe it. I really wished I had some kind of teleconverter though, especially for the Tiger shot. He was 50 yards away or more and you couldn't see him unless you went to a certain spot with the 300mm maxed.

Nice set of photos!

I will confidently guess the Panda was taken with the K5. It is the first camera I have owned that can accurately meter my white dog without screwing everything else up - no way the Kx could accurately get both the blacks and whites out of the Panda like that!

Surprise, surpise! The Panda was actually taken by the K-x on full Auto! As I mentioned, I set up the K-x for my wife to use. She, being new to DSLRs, asked that everything be set to Auto so the camera would work like a point and shoot, but she would control the zoom and composition. So the K-x was set to Auto, Matrix Metering, and a center point focusing.

Numbers 1 through 5 are from the K-5, while 6 to 10 are from the K-x Believe me, I was equally impressed when I saw the shots of the Bonobo ape (#6). I took the same shot with the K-5 and the background was totally blown. Of course, that's more on me then the camera

The Panda proved equally challenging though, because the exhibit was in a heavily shaded area, similar to being on the jungle floor I guess. So if you expose to catch detail in the environment, you stand a high chance of blowing out the detail of the Panda's white fur. But the K-x did a fine job and I continue to be impressed by this little camera.

+1

I would have guessed 2,4, and 9 from the K5. I like the hippo picture more every time I see it.

Agree on the giraffes. I think the hippo may have a lot of potential with a tight crop. Tiger is a great pose.
