Sunset on Hangzhou West Lake
Lens: Tamron 17-50 f2.8 Camera: K7 Photo Location: Hangzhou, China ISO: 400 Aperture: F8
Posted By: Frogfish, 12-22-2010, 11:18 AM

After taking my daughter to a casting in Hangzhou we took the opportunity to spend some time around the lake.

Only one of these shots has had any PP except noise reduction with Topaz Denoise.

These were the first shots with my new Tamron 17-50 f2.8. I think I like this lense

I would appreciate it if you could tell me your preferred 1,2,3 from these 6 .. thanks !

These are lovely and I really don't want to rate them so I will just tell which I like the least: #2 and 6. It was hard but I think I like #3 the best. Although the sun is centered the hanging fronds are heavier on the right which makes you forget the sun is centered (at least it does for me). Besides, the colors are very soothing. You did well IMHO.

#4 is the standout, IMO. The sky tonality is fantastic and that round thing, balloon?, looks like a dark moon and gives it a wonderful surreal feel. I'd probably crop out most of the water though, or even do a horizontal crop across the top half of the frame as you have it.

Thank you for your comments Susan. For some of these shots I was somewhat constricted (#1 & #6) as I had more trees on the right and I would have fallen into the lake had I gone any further left !

Thanks Pcarfan - glad you enjoyed them.

KXR4 - Again thank you for your comments. Personally I like that shot for exactly the reason you mentioned - the graduation and tonality of the colours. The round thing is actually a disk that spins below the balloon (that's of course already burst above it) - and it seems to have some kind of good luck character on it - though no-one at work could make it out. This was the only shot where I used flash - to bring out the foreground as well as the lake & setting sun in the background. I see what you mean about cropping out some of the water - yes, I think that would improve it.

Hey Kevin - I'm particularly taken with number 3, but they all look well done to me. Nice job.

I like them all, too difficult to sort them in order but 3 is the one I'd hang on my wall.

Thank you Axl, appreciated !

Thanks for viewing & the comments Sailor !

Cheers Tim - that one (and #1) seems to be gleaning the most votes over three forums.

Beautiful.

For me:
#1: 2 (would probably be the 3rd picture, but I'd like the moon to be off center)
#2: 1
#3: 4
#4: 3
#5: 5
#6: 6

Thought some of you might be interested so here I'm posting the results of the voting on these shots. It was a very revealing exercise because I really had no idea how people would vote and in the end I was surprised a little.

Voting was across 3 forums, 3 points for a 1st, 2 for 2nd and 1 for a 3rd :

#1 = 30
#2 = 34
#3 = 61
#4 = 12
#5 = 14
#6 = 10

My own preference ?

1. #1
2. #3
3. #6 & #2

But I keep changing my mind

Thank you all for your comments and your votes !
