First Chinese Bird Shots with DA*300
Lens: DA*300 Camera: K5 Photo Location: Shanghai
Posted By: Frogfish, 03-04-2011, 10:25 PM

OK I went off to the (huge) local park for a couple of hours to try out the new lense, plus there's a bonus kingfisher shot from the compound where I live (it has a small stream running through it that a pair of kingfishers have adopted).

If I know what they are I'll name them otherwise I've asked on a Birding forum (who are usually brilliant at recognising them) for names and I'll update this once I know.

#1 - These were in a flock of maybe 10 -15 birds feeding on the yellow flowers of this bush.

#2 - Long Tailed Shrike

#3 - Ibis ?

#4 - Same as above

#5 - Amur Wagtail

#6 - Light Vented Bul Bul

#7 - Light Vented Bul Bul

#8 - Common or Japanese Kingfisher (but I've seen other names for this)

Hmm site compression seems to have softened a few of these, 6 & 8 in particular. This seems to happen on all fora I've posted on to be fair - guess I should put up smaller versions !

Kevin, seems like you are mastering that long lens, much better photos than I last saw overall. I would try a smaller size just for comparison, but I wonder if it is more of a focus issue. Beautiful bird life in your area, not much to share from the Mojave Desert so I enjoyed the series. Bob

Thanks Bob ! Guess I should pick a smaller version on SmugMug - though they don't actually give you the size in kb.

Nice birds, Kevin! Now you've got me thinking about bringing the A*400mm on our trip to China

Nice shots. I have a choice right now between chickadees and redpolls so, it's nice to see a bit of variety. I've been trying to get shots of the goldeneyes down at the river but, I need at least a 2x for that.

Really like the first one. Lovely birds. I'm pretty sure your Ibis isn't (no curved bill). Looks like some sort of egret. Keep them coming. Love bird shots.
