The only problem I see with this shot is the overly busy background behind the train and a couple of steps further to the right may have avoided this and given a better angle to the train itself. But of course this is just my humble opinion.

Thanks for the suggestion. I totally agree with the busy background. Oh how I wish I had a 27" Calibrated Hi-Res Monitor in my car. On another thread, someone also suggested I use something more like f11 instead of the f20-f22 range I tried with this effort. Trying to max out D/F, I didn't realize the lens itself might perform better with a wider opening. I'll return to that spot again with a better understanding of how to setup the shot. THANKS!

The trees are a little busy, although they do help by giving contrast to the locomotive's steam plume, which otherwise would meld into the clouds. At any rate, you've captured a timeless scene here -- well done!

I love steamers and wish I had seen this beauty going by. I too have the 43mm and it is a spectacular lens. Try using the K-5 on shutter priority at 1/250 for handhelds and let the camera select the f stops for you. I think, as I was, you will be amazed how this lens preforms. I like the shot with plenty of space in front of the train, glad you posted. Welcome to the forum. Bob

Well, I like this photo from front to back and both sides too! Just an awesome shot with great colour clarity and tones. For balance you could try cropping on the right just over to the barn, as I quite like the farm scene. If you do go back I would love to see your shots. Thanks for sharing this one!

I don't mind the background very much. The engine is large enough to hold its own against those farm buildings. It is a lovely shot and, if it were mind, it would be a keeper.

Thanks All for the comments. I thought I'd go back on this even nicer day to try it again. Different location but this view allowed me to get more of the train in the picture.

Yes now the train is the point of focus and gives more detail.

This is always my favorite place to stop when I'm done taking pictures.

Edit: The picture definately has less saturation here than my original does.
