Anglesey Barracks, Snowdonia

The so-called Anglesey Barracks provided workers accommodation from the Dinorwic Slate quarry (in its heyday it employed about 3,000 people).
Some images taken from around the area.

Bonnie countryside, great shots of another long gone industry and a prime source of local employment.

Do you know if the quarry run out of slate or did it just become uneconomic to get it out?

Apparently a decline in the slate industry, plus the fact that the slate itself had become difficult to remove contributed to the closure

Thanks all.

Much the same story up here with our slate quarries.

I still think it makes for a far superior roofing material, well looks a lot nicer than the modern equivalents.

The granite quarry in my village (about 15 miles from where these were taken), has also gone the same way, closing in the early 1970's
