The Tri-X shots thread!
Posted By: lithos, 05-23-2008, 04:24 AM

It might seem a little limiting, and I don't mean to be descriminatory - not at all.

But I'd like to start a primo old-school Silver Halide thread dedicated to shots on that king among films, Kodak Tri-X. 400TX or 320TXP. It's not as pretentious as it seems. At least I don't think so. Well, do hope so. No HP5, even though Ilford lists it as an alternative for Tri-X.

Just Tri-X

Second rule is, if you wish to submit photos to this forum, pleas don't add them as an attachment to your post. This uses up valuable Pentax Forum disk space, a rare and precious resource on any forum. I'm sure Adam guards our disk space jealously. I hope, again.

The second reason for the second rule is that a lot of attachments I see lay multiple pictures out horizontally, and this causes page widening which is annoying to read, and will affect the whole page of a thread.

I've used Photobucket for five years, and it hasn't let me down. It's free, but if it asks for a phone number, don't put your real number in there.

Don't use flickr, unless you want your photos to end up on a porn DVD cover or get slandered by Virgin mobile.

I'll start. You don't have to put the full details of the shot (lens, camera, aperture, shutter speed, pushing/pulling info, developer used) but it helps.

Local bass player, Simon Polhill. TX pushed two stops, devved in D76 1:1, M 50mm f1.4, wide open, ME Super. Assignment for local metal band Sedition, opening for Helloween.

Postmaster-General manhole cover, rainy day, with graffiti. TX pushed two stops, straight D76, M 50 f1.4 @ about f4 or 5.6, ME.

Pre-election politics, 2007 (of course!). TX pushed two stops, again D76, Me Super, M 50mm f1.4 wide open.

Sorry to hear that, mate. I should start a film-only thread. I know of only three places that have it in stock (and one of those isn't guaranteed to have it in at all times.) One other place is ordering it - apparently, it's gets shipped to Melbourne first, not Sydney, which would be more logical.

Wait, do you get Efke and Forte and all that stuff? Maco (Rollei)? We don't.

Not really. We only get the consumer-type Fuji and Kodak film. It sucks. A LOT!

There's only place I know of where I can buy Velvia, and even that's in limited supply. And VERY VERY expensive for Romanians - about $16 US! (for one roll of film)

But wait! I've found a place that sells Tri-X at about $8 / 36 exposures. Is that a good price?

Well, Velvia, all versions, would cost me about $20-22US a roll. Eight bucks for Tri-X, though, is about what I pay.

Don't worry about what jgredline says, it's gonna be cheaper for the Americans as it's made in New York.

So it's not a bad price, then.

Now if I only had somewhere to develop it...

Do you have access to some sort of cupboard...?

(And it's great you're willing to try it, even though you haven't before. Tri-X is one of the least expensive films out there, but it's also one of the best.)

Sadly, I don't. I'm a student and space is very limited as it is.

On top of that, the chemicals involved in processing would kill my wallet!

how about 3200 ISO

Look at what you can do with Tri-X pushed 3 stops.

took this with a KX and 50mm F1.4 at 1/30th wide open

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/235547-post5.html

And to think people bitch today about high ISO performance. If they only knew
