TUTORIAL: Posting photos from Flickr/PBase
Posted By: foxglove, 02-13-2007, 06:19 PM

Flickr:

Hello,

a user asked me if could give him a guide for posting images from flickr and i decided to create this tutorial instead, so that it can remain as a future reference for anyone interessted.

Let's begin.. I'll assume that you already have the image uploaded to your flickr account

.. oh, the used browser was Firefox, if you are using IE the menus may differ a little.

1) Go to the "Post your photos!" Section

2) Click the Button "New Thread"

3) Go to you flickr account and go to the page of the image you wish to post here on the forum, then click on the "All Sizes" button

4) Click on the "Medium" link

5) Right-Click on the medium size image, and click "Copy Image Location"

6) Now let's get back to the "Post New Thread" on PentaxForums,

Left-Click on the "Insert Image" Button

and the folowing popup will appear:

now Paste the image location which you previously Copyed,
you can Right-Click and Paste, or just use CTRL+V

At this point if you press the submit button, the medium sized image will be displayed on the post, i use the medium sized image to use as thumbnails, next i'll show you how to create a link, so that when someone click the medium image will be forwarded to the large size one.

If you do not wich to create thumbnails, on step 4) go directly to the large size image instead of the medium size, and your done.

Creating a link from the medium size image on PentaxForums to the Large Size on flickr:

7) Repeat step 4) and 5) but instead of going to the medium size, go to the large size image.

8) On the "Post new Thread" page, select all the image location, including the [IMG] tags, and the press the "Insert Link" button.

9) A popup will appear, Paste the URL of the large size image (which you already copied on step 7) using CTRL+V and then click OK.

If everything went OK, you should have the medium size image displayed on the post, and if you click the image you will be forwarded to the large size image.

Just repeat this steps to every image you want to post.

I Hope this helps someone, any doubt just drop me a PM or post here.

PBase:

Many using pbase have run into problems posting here, with images showing up sporadically, or not at all. The solution is very simple: make sure the url you use has nothing between "www" and "pbase", other than the necessary dot, of course. I don't know how it works in other browsers or operating systems, but I right-click on the image and select "Copy Link Location" (Firefox, Windows XP). All you have to do is make sure the image url ends with the image extension...Easy, huh?

example:

photobucket.com is easier to use as well... you upload the pic, click the correct URL and it even copies it to your clipboard for you...

Thanks Julie - as you know, I had a bit of a challenge with this recently. My "conundrum" is that I've already got my pbase galleries totally cluttered up with images, and I'm trying (albeit somewhat poorly) to cull them down. Adding photos into public galleries for mini-challenges here and elsewhere would not be my preference since a lot of those images aren't necessarily ones I want to share beyond the "pentax club", so it was nice to discover that I could share images from private galleries by using the somewhat odd url that pbase provides for those images. Unfortunately, while that works elsewhere, it doesn't work here. So, I'll have to just post anything for this forum in public galleries there, or learn how to upload photos here in addition to there. Anyway, that's probably more than you all wanted to know .

The handy-dandy thing here is the ability to attach a photo to a message - it's not in a gallery, it only exists in the message itself. I use that if I'm posting something that isn't interesting enough to put in a gallery, like what-is-it tag items. There's limited space for attachments, I guess, but it's one more option.

Betsy, that seems odd... The URL for my "challenge" photos stored on pbase (non-public gallery, but not password protected) doesn't look any different from any of the photo from my other gallerys. You might be able to work back to the hidden gallery after clicking on the image, but I don't think you can see the gallery from root level drilling down. Or maybe I'm wrong. Do you mind testing this? Thanks.

The url for the image below is www(dot)pbase.com/swengineer/image/70036096/small.jpg

Your link worked, so maybe it's the password protection that's the problem. The following picture is in a "non-public" gallery, but isn't password protected. If you can see it, I would guess that means it works.

Well, the url's of my pics at pbase start with i, not www (as in http://i.pbase.com/g6/20/754320/2/77984292.IgEXd7iR.jpg ) .

Not sure if that's what makes them behave erratically on this board. They seem to post fine elsewhere.

Don't know if that's the problem. But apparently, this pic also goes by http://www.pbase.com/andbot/image/77984292.jpg I'd recommend the latter URL base for sharing pic here.
Actually, I'm not sure where you even find the i.pbase.com URLs.

Well, that's odd. When I go to pbase and do "Copy image location" on that pic, I get the url http://i.pbase.com/g6/20/754320/2/77984292.IgEXd7iR.jpg.
On the other hand, the url you give seems to be working exactly the same. Bizarre.

EDIT: And now I have updated the url's in the original thread to the www format, and it seems to work just fine. I guess that may be part of the problem, at least in some cases.

Sounds reasonable, I’ll try and give it a go :

It seems to work, so thanks for the help. (I just copied what you had done, and put my own image in instead).
Couldn't figure out, how to move a picture from Pbase, and into a gallary of my own at this place.

I’m still a film shooter, so have just now gotten around to getting a Pbase account.

Not super sharp, since boat rocking, a lot of moisture in the air, and at 300 mm.

Taken using slide film with the Z-1P, with lens Tamron 28-300 Aspherical LD [IF] f/3.5-6.3.

What is Pbase and how is it used?

Julie,

Could you find some time to educate me about the Pbase thingy?

Thanks,

Sure, no sweat - pbase is just one of many photo hosting sites on the web. It's somewhat like the user gallery here, it simply provides you with storage space for your photos. There are all sorts of them, some free, some have a yearly fee. If the space Mo provides here is enough for you, then you don't need another host. If you decide you do want another place for your photos, search the forum, I think there was a thread on the subject a while back in which everyone touted the benefits of their favourite photo hosting site! Pbase has this little quirk where you have to copy the right url or it won't display consistently here, otherwise, it's a good site. Hope that helps!

I for one would like to thank you for taking the trouble to do this Pornflake. Perhaps you could ask Adam to make it a sticky so it doesn't get lost.
