Takin' it to the streets - Part 3: Chinatown
Posted By: maxwell1295, 09-30-2008, 01:10 PM

This is the 3rd installment of my street shooting series. I had an interesting day yesterday, so there will be two installments today. I probably won't be posting the other until later today or sometime tomorrow...

I headed into the city to meet my wife. I was off for the day, but she went into to work. We decided to meet for dinner when she got off at 4pm. I purposely got into the city a little early in hopes of taking a few pics of the Brooklyn Bridge. The sky was kinda crappy so I decided to take a quick stroll through Chinatown instead.

The Long Island Railroad takes you into Penn Station. That's where I encountered this street musician, a folk singer named Wendy Sayvetz. I didn't buy a CD, but I did drop a few bucks into her guitar case.

From there it was onto the Subway and down to Canal Street...

If you want to buy fresh produce (seafood in particular) this is the place to visit...

There are all types of vendors selling their wares...

This guy was like watching a live informercial for a vegetable slicer. It worked pretty well too..

Not everyone was impressed. This woman looked a little skeptical...

This guy was more concerned with whatever he was eating...

...and I guess the whole scene just put this guy to sleep.

Great work Alan, I always look forward to seeing your street shots. I try not to pick favs because I like to see the series as a whole when I can.

Good stuff; I lean toward the B&W but that's just my bias. The same camera/lens for all?

Thanks for the comment. I've been partial to the B&W stuff myself. As far as the lenses go, I used the DA*50-135 for most of them, with a few shots from the Sigma 24-60mm.

BTW, I got a very nice e-mail from a friend of the singer in the first pic. It turns out she's battling cancer. I took a few more pics of her that I didn't post but I'm going to make sure she gets copies of them. I could feel the passion in her singing and I'm sure that same passion is helping her fight this battle.

Here's a link to more info on her for anyone who's interested: PAW: Alumni Spotlight - Wendy Sayvetz

Those are great shots. I like street photos, there are no actors, just honest people going about their lives. Thanks for sharing. Are you using your DA* lens for all the shots?

Thanks. I used the 50-135 for every shot here except #1 and #3....I'm pretty sure they were shot with the Sigma 24-60mm.

Nice Series

Alan - Just want to leave a quick "good work" for all three of your posts. I really enjoy seeing the daily life in NY. I've never been there before but your posts make me want to go and just wander around and look at the people. Never mind the sights. Thanks for sharing these with us.

Excellent series Alan... Folks up there seem to be oblivious to the camera. Down here in DC you'd probably be getting into fights.
