Thin Ice! (?)
Posted By: jsherman999, 11-15-2008, 04:31 PM

.

Here are some shots from my Super-Takumar (non SMC) 135 3.5.

I thought I was getting really high shutter speeds, but chalked it up to
shooting in better light than usual. Half-way through the shoot, I realized
that I had the lens set on 'MAN' and not 'AUTO', and that every shot was
wide-open.

Still, it did pretty well wide-open:

Here are a couple crops stopped down one, after I noticed the AUTO peeking
at me.

On a good day, my DA 50-135 can maybe match this:

Last tight crop was ISO 400, so some chroma noise in shadows, but the detail
this Tak retains at distance and 135mm is amazing.

Is that a second bird in the bushes? I almost missed it, and then it just popped up and changed the entire psychological composition. Sometimes the best craft is making good mistakes.

Along that line, with the birds in the water, the in-focus bird and the rock near it both have similar shadows and have bright water rings around them. The image seems underexposed if you're trying to show detail in the birds, and overexposed for detail in the water. As it is, though, the shadows of the bird and the rock are just visible, and the bright rings have enough detail, that these divergent subjects--bird and rock--are cast in the same mold. I like that.

Three cheers for old lenses.

Very strong indeed. Shots 4,5,6,and 7 all leave indelible impressions, at least to me..
