(Very) Fast action pictures
Posted By: ismaelg, 04-11-2009, 11:33 AM

Hello,

Newbie here. I am by no means a pro, but I want to share some of my work with you. I've been a Pentax freak for years.
Only a few days after getting my Pentax K100D Super, it got its "baptism of fire" at the 2007 Petit LeMans race in Road Atlanta.
Whoever said Pentax were not good for very fast action photography never told me!

All these pics are with the K100D Super, kit's lens (DA18-55).

This particular shot is my favorite. I printed a 20x30 poster and it hangs proudly in my family room. The car is doing full speed there.

Canons and Nikons were hiding from the rain

Comments and opinions welcomed.
Thanks,
Ismael

Nice series. Second my favorite.
How to get such effect, when a car is focused and backround is not. Do you move camera?

You must have been sitting pretty damn close to the road if you were using the kit lens. Impressive stuff.

Thank you all for the nice comments!

Mindaugas: As netuser says, it's panning. I follow the subject and shoot at the right moment. It takes some practice. I like to have manual control over shutter speed to make sure it is fast enough for the subject to be sharp and slow enough for the background to be blurred.
Daacon: Then I guess I shouldn't tell you my backup is a film Pentax K-1000
alehel: I walked the whole track looking for good spots, and there is also some minor cropping done in PS.

Thanks everybody!
Ismael

Very nice action shots. A few years ago I went to the US Grand Prix at IMS and my Nikon Coolpix P&S just wasn't up to the task of fast auto action and I was rather disappointed. I decided I wanted to buy an SLR and that's when I got my *istDL and lo and behold, F1 pulled out of North America altogether so I have yet to get a chance to photograph F1. I would have to check and see if there are any other series that race nearby, like at Watkins Glen. I know F1 will return to North America again, it would be stupid if they didn't, and when that happens I'll be going with my K20D. I watched part of the 24hrs of LeMans this past year and I liked it but it doesn't interest me as much as F1. Your pictures are perfect in my opinion and I hope to be able to capture racing as well when I get a chance.

I am pretty sure the Indy car series races Watkins every year now, would be a cool event to see...But still, no comparison to F1.

Great shots at R A, that is a cool track, I just wish there was something like that close to me here in St. Louie...

I was also at that race with my K100D.

Got a bunch of good shots, mainly with the Tokina RMC 70-210mm MF zoom. Even got one in PPG from it!

Nice to see some other perspectives on the same race.

Great job panning. I'm still trying to get a feel for it.
