Reflections in their eyes (Hummingbird images)
Posted By: Marc Langille, 04-27-2009, 06:38 PM

Last weekend I put up the hummingbird feeders... Within 20 seconds the first male landed...

After teaching macro class last Thursday and the field trip on Saturday I ended up taking several images that day - maybe 3 macros with the Tammy 28-75/2.8!! I did end up taking some interesting people pics instead, so I'll share those later.

I've wanted desperately to get some perched shots to compliment my in-flight portfolio of images. Today I finally got out the big fast glass and boy was I glad that I did! Not so good lighting...

Taken with the K10D + FA* 300/2.8 and Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF TC. It took me just over an hour to get this close to my little returnees. Little or no cropping in these images. Only default conversion from RAW in ACR, no additional sharpening, minor Levels adjustment for the background to deepen it's hues in the second image. Taken ISO 640, 1/160 sec. and 1/100 sec. respectively:

The Defender:

EXIF

Crop - not at 100% though... at 100% the head and bill are ~ 9 inches in length:

On Alert:

EXIF

Crop - at 100% the head and bill are ~ 7 inches in length:

First serious shoot in a while... at lower than recommended shutter speeds too... I am such a rust bucket...

Part II can be found here:

Cheers,

Marc

Wow Marc! I'd say that was a very productive hour. Those should compliment your in flight shots very well.

Thank you Scott and there are some more "unusual" images to come!

Wonderfull pictures! The first is my fav. Colors and composition makes it a great shot even if that humming bird would have been a potato

I wonder if those hummingbird feeders would work in my garden also...

Thank you Heinrich - they were excellent entertainment value for me too. It's quite a busy job for one male to defend a feeder...

Thank you Gary! Eventually I'll try recovering the blown area on the left side of the throat, but I wanted to show folks what the straight conversion from ACR looked like (other than comments given in original post).

I've got one shot where his head feathers are fluffed out and he looks quite intimidating! For a hummingbird of course...

Marc

I have a couple of other bird feeders in my yard. Guess it is time to find a place to put a hummingbird feeder. YES!!!! Redsign time.

A sincere thank you Douglas for the compliments!
