I think the focal length is very usable, though mostly for people... it's not wide enough for landscapes or architecture and not long enough for traditional portrait work. It's really the ultimate pub lens, I guess.
It's the ultimate walk-around lens imo. If I had to choose only one lens to use, I'd probably take some of the 30/1.4. In cropped sensor it gets around the 50mm which is pretty much the (non-mathematical) focal lenght of human eye. Works for landscapes and portraits more than well enough if you know what you're doing.
Also, I've heard only good things about the Sigma primes. The 50/1.4 is amazing from what I've tested. And looking at the pics from the 30, taken at 1.4 or 1.7 and 1/30 or 1/45, it seems to be as good.
