Lake Michigan, Promontory Point Park
Posted By: darrenleow, 11-22-2009, 02:09 AM

Some photos from this morning's sunrise. The water body pictured is Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes of America. It's so big that it looks like the sea rather than a lake. The sky started turning bright at around 6.10am but the sun only emerged around 7am. Next time I'll be there earlier to catch more of the blues and reds.

Some wide-angle photos first. Shot with a K20D and DA12-24.

Great photos!
I especially like the second one of the first set. I like the way the rocks anchor my eye after it wanders the horizon.

Beautiful colours and textures in the first batch. Beautiful colours and moods created in the second.
They're all stunning.
My only suggestion would be to perhaps run a pass of sharpening to the first lot, if indeed at 100% there's any bluriness. Hard to see on my monitor but I get the hint of softness in the foreground subject matter - but otherwise pristine scenes captured to perfection.

thanks everyone!

ash: you're right, the foreground is slightly soft. i don't think managed to get the foreground in perfectly sharp focus. i've printed out a hyperfocal distance chart so i'll try to put that into practice at my next attempt at the lake.

Very good.
You can consider focusing in on a mid-distance object and just stop down further until you find the sharpness sweet spot - a trial-and-error hyperfocal distance if you will...

does anyone know if the curved horizon is due to lens distortion, or the curvature of the earth?

Definitely not curvature of the earth.
No rectilinear lens is wide enough and free of distortion to depict the earth's curvature on an image. We're talking about a sphere of over 12750km diameter!
