Macro without a Macro lens
Lens: 28mm and 200mm Camera: K10D Photo Location: Work ISO: 100
Posted By: Mechan1k, 12-31-2009, 09:16 AM

Decided to break out the M42 Extension tubes and stack them together.

I found the wider the lens the more magnification I could get ... but the wider you go the thinner the DOF as well.

I forgot to bring my tripod with me ... but 2 sec MLU worked well enough with the lens supported.

Here's the first one with my SMC Takumar 200mm f/4 with 55mm of stacked tubes.

100% crop

Here's the ones done with the 28mm f/3.5 (shot at f/8 just to get anything in focus due to thin DOF)

100% crop

With the 28mm with stacked tubes I found I literally had to have the subject up against the front element of the lens.

I was pleasantly surprised with the results with the lack of lighting that I had.

I'll still keep mucking around and see what results I'll get.

You will have me getting my extension tubes out soon rather than later Simon as the tamron 90mm f/2.8 has arrived and the extension tubes will give me 1:2 rather than 1:1 posting soon and as always TFS

cheers

Nice work with the lighting, people always forget that, apart from DOF, lighting is another headache.

cupic, good to see you are getting a Tammy 90mm ... I LOVE mine.

I actually want to try my Tammy x1.4 TC with the 90mm at one point if i can.

Damn Brit ... I was lucky with the lighting .... no flash used ... just the flouro ceiling lighting in my office here on nightshift ... although our desks are white ... so there's decent reflective lighting here to make things a little easier. The last couple wer shot using a 6 second shutter speed ... just to get anough light in at f/11.

Actually I didn't have my tripod with me ... the camera still had the QR Plate in the bottom ... and I used a few mousepads for cushioning/support ... and a couple of post-it notepads to get the lens height right.

I had to improvise ... and of course the 2 sec MLU was needed ... I had a few where there was movement ... I jsut had to reshoot it and make sure there was no movement.

I did a quick read-up on magnification and how to work it out ... and due to it being closer than 1:1 ... trying to get as much in focus was hard ... especially with available light.

Actually ... here's a crappy iphone pic of my 200mm tubes setup ... as you see the desk is white and works in my favour really.

This time I am using the the Super takumar 35mm f/3.5 (at f/11 and a 10 sec exposure)

The subject is the mini leather case that the extension tubes came in ... with the AOG (Asahi Optical Group????) symbol on it ... and then the 100% crop of the "A" stamped in the lid.

100% crop
