Kx in Death Valley this week
Camera: Pentax Kx Photo Location: Daeth Valley
Posted By: lectrolink, 04-18-2010, 03:22 PM

I just graduated to a new Kx from a point & shoot and went to Death Valley last weekend to put it through its paces. This is my first post showing my first batch of shots with the new Kx (first DSLR too!), shot using kit lenses (18-55 + 55-300).

First shot: F5.6@1/250 107mm
Second shot: F10@1/500 55mm
Third shot: F22@1/60 24mm
Fourth shot: F4.5@1/320 55mm

All shots used circular polarizer. All post processed in Photoshop.

Comments and criticisms welcome!
Dave

Oh wow.

The first two photos really blew me away, the layering and the shadows in those mountains really look amazing. Is that CA 167 in the second one? That road and the one in the Mojave sure are famous for a lot of photos. I really like these photos.

Great shots, first one is stunning and I really like the third one too, eerie. I just got the K-x too and these shots prove that I made a good choice... now I just need to learn how to use it!

Very cool looking shots, I have always wanted to head out to Death valley and take some photos but I just don't have the means right now. I am hoping to soon save up some money and head that way and try and catch some of that beautiful place.

Wow, these photos bring back memories of my trip through the desert in Utah. I will be part of the pack and get down on my knees in front of the first shot, which could not be better.

But I also love the third one, with the snow. The framing is a bit off (left side of tree cropped) but the atmosphere is great. I enjoyed being up to my knees in snow at one spot on the highway and baking in a T-shirt in the land of rock and sand, with no water in sight, a mere twenty minutes later. Great landscape.

Those first three are pretty awesome. You didn't have much of a learning curve with your new K-x did you? Beautiful job.

Thanks for the encouragement

It means a lot to have people be so positive. I have to admit that a lot of the "pop" on these shots comes from the PP in Photoshop (the orginals are quite a bit less contrasty), but nevertheless, I think I got a fair number of keeper shots from my trip. Death Valley offers a lot of win for any photographer.
By the way, I submitted #1 and #3 to Pentax Photo Gallery and they were immediately accepted. Yay...
Also submitted those two to National Geographic Traveler monthly photo contest (this month happens to be Landscape!)... there is a $12 entry fee per photo...we'll see what happens.
Go Pentax!

Beautiful landscapes, and that third image looks really cool with the fog coming in on the upper right corner. Nice shots, and as someone else before said, the layering on the mountains is awesome.
