Well they're not established enough to offer something like NPS, but you know that going in. I would think for a pro (who buys new) it would be in Ricoh's interest to offer a free loaner if they can't expedite service.

I have no idea how many pros are using 645D/Zs and if it exceeds their targets, but if they expected few working pros it could explain the situation some.

Good call, I think you nailed it.

Not to sound like a mirrorless evangelist in every conversation, but I'll bet $7 from a craft store can make my Fuji quieter than his $1,000 blimp.

Just out of curiosity, have you considered using a smaller format sensor instead of those really tiny apertures? You're losing sharpness beyond f/8-f/11 on APS-C anyway.

Maybe the Q shooters can chime in? To me that seems like a good application for them.

PS - nice photos!

Which 50 to keep? Da vs F 1.7

Whatever the cause, they are quite noticeably different.

We (PentaxForums) are currently writing an in-depth comparison article between the DA50/1.8 and the M50/1.7 and two other 50mm lenses. They're all very good, but the modern DA is without question the best for corner sharpness and CA. If that matters to you, then the DA is 'better'.

I've used many free and not free pieces of software for photography. Nothing has everything that Lightroom offers. For most shooting I don't ever have to leave that application.

If there were free applications which were as good, I'd be happy to use them. None of the ones I've tried are.

Which 50 to keep? Da vs F 1.7

They're both very good lenses. The DA 50/1.8 has lower chromatic aberration and is a touch sharper in the corners, so if purely image quality is all you're after, sell the F.

HD DA 40mm Limited -- Thoughts on my review?

More popular <> better.

I'd be happy to be impressed with the 43, I seem to be enamored with every other Limited I've tried, FA or DA. That one just never did it for me!

HD DA 40mm Limited -- Thoughts on my review?

Truth be told, I never liked the 43, and passed up buying one for cheap. Back 8 years ago (oh man, I'm getting old!) it was pretty criticized even in the early days of PF. I remember it specifically being used as an example of "bad bokeh".

Looking at the recent PF 43mm Ltd review, I'm pretty sure the criticism was founded.

Of course, I totally underestimated the DA40 Ltd. I'll be happy to be pleasantly surprised. 😄

How could I forget about this review? We already did one of those, just with the SMC version. IMO the HD version is very slightly better than the SMC version, as was also covered in a comparative review.

Hey Frank! Long time. Too bad you're not shooting but glad you're still around.

FYI to the buyer - I used an IR filter from Frank (probably the same guy who did your conversion?) and still use my IR-converted 6-megapixel *ist DS. I just printed a 12"x18" which is tack sharp from it! Amazing how much more resolution was in those little 6MP cameras when you remove the fuzzy filter from it. You should be very happy!

HD DA 40mm Limited -- Thoughts on my review?

For me, yes. The 40mm XS lacks 49mm filter threads (it only has the small threads) so I can't put my existing ND and IR filters on that one. It also doesn't have the neat little hood like the DA does.

They certainly can be funky - and they don't always show up, which is why some respondents told you it isn't normal. Some people I'm sure are more bothered than others - for my needs it was a very small factor. I don't find myself shooting foliage at f/2.8 much!

I suppose since there are already 43mm Limited and 35mm/2.4 recently-published reviews, we could focus this one just on the 40mm Limited.

Sort of, in the beginning paragraph here: HD Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited Review - General Image Quality | PentaxForums.com Reviews

It's a 'normal' lens in this scope. I think we could fill a 100-page thread about what a 'normal' focal length lens is 'for'!

Thanks a lot for your comments.

HD DA 40mm Limited -- Thoughts on my review?

I reviewed my littlest lens, the DA 40mm F2.8 Limited, and was impressed. I honestly only bought it (the lens reviewed was purchased by me not in conjunction with the review) because it was so darn small. But the IQ had really few flaws.

In retrospect, we probably should have compared to the FA 43mm Limited. My suspicion is that the tiny DA 40mm would beat it...

What do you think?

I'm running Lightroom 4 on Ubuntu using a beta version of Wine. I tried all the other software mentioned here, but Lightroom works so much better for me.

Supposedly Lightroom 5 now runs on the latest Wine, but I haven't gotten it to install.

I worked for a Norwegian company many years ago. During the Lillehammer Olympics they set up TVs in all the offices to watch.

When the Norwegian was preparing for the ski jump, the American announcer called him the 'Swedish ski jumper'. What howling ensued!

Whoa there.

If you're shooting the (old, manual focus) A 400mm f/5.6, an analogous (old, manual focus) 600mm f/4 is nowhere near $10,000. Or $5,000. And they're not equivalents; you could emulate the A lens with a 300mm f/4 and a teleconverter. I got mine (Nikon lens/Tamron 1.4x TC) for $500. Apples to apples.

In fact, a better way to get the look of his 300mm f/4 is to get a 300mm f/4 and a 1.4x TC. Nikon makes a fully-autofocus VR combo that works quite well. (Yes, the latest version is pricey.)

Or he can do what I use to shoot sports professionally and pick up a used Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 and a 1.4x (or 2x if desired) TC. Autofocus is terrific and fast, and results are stunning.
