Brief, huge price drop on big lenses at B&H this morning?

Did anyone else see the dropped prices for some lenses on B&H's website this morning? I got email alerts about 9.5 hours ago (5am CDT) about the following prices:

D FA* 70-200mm f/2.8 - $1296.50
D FA* 15-30mm f/2.8 - $935.06
D FA* 50mm f/1.4 - $791.45

And, these prices are shown as being the current price at B&H on the price tracker on their respective Lens Database pages. But as of now (2:30pm CDT) the prices for these lenses are approximately normal.

I'm wondering if it was a short lived sale that I missed, or just a glitch on the B&H or PF website.

Edit: DFA 24-70, DFA 150-450, DFA 70-210, DFA 28-105, and DFA 85 also show major price drops on their Lens Database pages, but prices are not dropped on B&H. So, all DFA lenses except the 50mm Macro and 100mm Macro.

Sticky: How to use/meter Manual & M42 Lenses on all Pentax DSLRs (K-1, K-3, K-5, K-30, etc)

I just got a Takumar 200mm f/3.5 and found that its rear is so narrow that it does not reach the contacts on the K-50's lens mount, and because they are not shorted by a lens, the camera will not perform stop-down metering unless I hold a piece of foil or something on the contacts. (It does work wonderfully in Av mode, of course, when an automatic mode is desired.) I suppose this narrow rear end is somewhat uncommon among m42 lenses, since this article never mentions being unable to stop down a lens due to the contacts not being shorted?

Thanks for pointing to this. The info in the review is very helpful. I also noticed several other reviews have similar info on other cameras, and have added this to my spreadsheet.

Good point - high accuracy is not relevant here because of the large amount of variance. (I've edited my post accordingly)

Glad you asked. There's more than one thing that a person may enjoy about photography. Certainly taking pictures is fun, but others (including myself) additionally enjoy thinking about technical aspects. In this case, I'm trying to determine what size SD cards I want to use/purchase. My main purpose was to create a quick reference so that someone who is switching cameras (in my case, from a K-50 to a K-1 II) could see the approximate file sizes from their old camera and their new camera. Then, with a preconceived notion of how well various SD card sizes suit them in their old camera, they can get an idea what sizes would suit their use of the new camera.

I do my best to spend my time doing the things I enjoy, such as studying cameras, and taking pictures. I hope you also spend your time doing what you enjoy :)

Hello folks,

I was looking for information on approximate file sizes from the K-1 II, because I'm upgrading from the K-50 and wondering what SD card sizes will have comparable image capacities. I've looked around on the internet and this forum and haven't found much info, so I was curious if anyone knows where I might find this or would be willing to do a quick check on their average file sizes.

EDIT: Adam's comment below links to the K-1 review which gives a full explanation of file sizes on the K-1. Also, the reviews here of several other cameras include this information. I have added columns to my spreadsheet containing what I could find in the reviews.

I started a spreadsheet, with the goal to compile basic numbers on file sizes from every Pentax DSLR. This certainly won't provide the full picture on file sizes in different situations (lighting and ISO changes) but should serve to give a rough idea when considering if you want to use a different size SD card when switching from one model to another (my original goal).

Pentax DSLR file sizes - Google Sheets

If you have data you'd like to contribute, please reply here with the following info (it will be added to the second tab of the spreadsheet):

* Camera model
* File type (DNG, PEF, 3* JPG, 2* JPG, 1* JPG)
* Quantity of files
* Total size of all files (please include units - bytes, KB, MB, GB - and a couple digits of accuracy)

If anyone has suggestions for improving this spreadsheet, please let me know. I don't want to to make it unnecessarily detailed, but if there's something that you think would make it more informative or easier to read, I'd like to consider it. I'm not too familiar with most Pentax camera models and their various file settings, so I may need to add more columns for other file types/settings.

That's good to know - I do wind up in Nebraska more than occasionally. What's the name of the dealer?

Thanks for the warm welcome, all. Much appreciated.

I notice most of you have one or more banners at the bottom of your posts indicating your cameras - how do you do that?

Hello everyone,

I am a young guy in Kansas, recently graduated from K-State. I have loved taking pictures for as long as I can remember, and have attempted to learn as much as I can from my dad - using my own compact cameras and occasionally his SLRs and DSLRs. I finally have my own DSLR which is providing me the opportunity to have even more fun and learn even more. I am looking forward to making use of this website - it seems to have quite a wealth of information, and I've only scratched the surface so far.

The attached picture is one I took a few minutes ago. I've been sitting in my room all evening reading online and taking test pictures of the random things in my room - this one is with my K-50 and an old Vivitar 135mm f2.8 lens. It is of the corner of a TV antenna sitting in my room, that I have yet to mount outside.

Happy shooting! :D

- Adam
