I am not sure about the Pentax slide copier but seems that there are some options currently for sale. If you google "Scan film with DSLR" you will find many blogs, webs about the subject, some more "professional" than others:

How to digitise film negatives using a DSLR ? Ant tran
How to Scan Film Negatives with a DSLR

About the light, it is absolutely essential to soften and make it even on the frame, thats why I use the elbow, so the light is not falling directly into the negative. I have tried many different options but this has been the best so far...

Below is a picture of my gadget, I know that it is not pretty but it works :) (the Program Plus is only to show the layout ).
I am working now in an upgraded version to be able to scan 120 negatives with the same system.

I have been scaning my negatives for a while with my DSLR, both 35mm and 120. You just need your digital camera, a macro lens (a normal lens plus extension tubes will also work), a light source behind the negative (I use a bulb+a white PVC elbow to soften the light) and some patience.

You get RAW files (I shoot with my K3 or K50 so 24 or 16 megapixel file) wich you can process in lightroom of any other post processing software.
This way you have much more control over your final image, you can increase contrast, clarity, correct under/over exposure on the original picture etc.
Here some pictures I have processed that way:

120 | Flickr

I recently built a scanning "holder" with some laminated wood and plastic sheet to hold the negative, the camera and the light in place, Once I have everything set, I can scan one 36 exposure roll in a few minutes.

Odd exposure behaviour with Tamron 10-24 on K-3?

I have found the same problem with my copy of the 10-24 in the K-3II. I almost always use it at about f8 and the camera overexpose by 1EV to 1,5EV.

In the K-50 it overexposes also but only by 0,5EV. I haven't noticed any problem with the aperture lever but haven't checked neither so...

I can live with that, just adjust the exposure one EV and it I am good to go.

Upgrading my K50

I also have a K01 and many film cameras, thats why I was thinking in selling the K50 if I finally bought the K3II.

My idea was upgrading to the K3II now that I can buy it 20% cheaper in Canada than in Europe. Also that camera should last much longer than the K50, not only for its expected life but for the features it has.

I have now even more doubts than before

Upgrading my K50

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking in upgrading my K-50 (about 10k actuation and 1,5 years). I am very happy with it but I am mainly afraid about the aperture block failure. I am thinking in trying to sell it and upgrade to another model.
The options are K-70 and K-3II (I don’t consider the KP as the price seems to be very high and I don’t see an advantage over the K-3II). I have read that the K-70 share the aperture motor with the K-50 so it can suffer the same problem. This leaves me only one option, the K3II, being a semi-pro camera I can expect a longer life. I have not read about any common issue with the K3II, right?
So, my question is, do you think it does worth buying a K3II (being a 2013 camera is not cutting edge technology), and will be the K-50 easy to resell?
If I do finally upgrade, I would do it in the next 1-2months as I am leaving Canada (I am from Spain and in Canada for work) and the cost of the K3II is about 200€ more expensive in Europe.

Thanks for your opinions!

Have you think about using your DSLR to scan the negatives? I have been scanning B&W film with my K50 and the 100mm macro and the results are very good, even better than the traditional flatbed scanner. You just need a ligth source (like this: Logan Electric 4 x 5" Slim Edge Light Pad 750219 B&H Photo) and your sharper lens.

Read this articles, you will find them very interesting:

Pentax M 50mm 1.7 fungus?

Thanks for your response. My main concern is not if the image quality would be affected, I am pretty sure that will be not, especially in an APS-C sensor. My main worry is that I don’t want to spread the fungus in my other lenses or the camera.
If is not fungus I will use the lens without trying to clean it.

Hi all,

This is the first time I post here but I have been following you since I bought my K50 about 10 months ago. I chose Pentax because of the good memories I have of my fatherīs K1000 when I was child and 10 months later I have nothing to regret. Every day I enjoy more and more photography and Pentax.

Thank you
