Yeah, just actual-size JPEGs would be fine to evaluate overall quality.

Pentax 645z decision vs D810 - struggling

I was like OP and had a tough time swallowing the upgrade to a Z from my old FF kit. But, when I found out about the D being so affordable (in a professional sense) I took the plunge.

While it lacks the bells and whistles of the Z and the shooting process is a bit slower, the image quality is fantastic. You can absolutely pull several stops out of the blacks and still be just fine. I only ever worry about highlights. I know that I can pull those blacks pretty hard.

The D might be the slow cousin from the back woods compared to the Z, but for that leap from FF to MF it absolutely is not a pretender.

When I faced this decision recently, I just got a 645d instead. The low cost made it's 'experimental' nature affordable enough that I'm not sweating the choice.

645Z vs Leica S = that look

I think your test is highlighting the fact that these cameras were designed with different photographers in mind. All of the cameras no doubt have excellent dynamic range and resolution. But, the first two (A7 and M240) seem to take that resolution and color and make some definite decisions about how to record or represent it, and thus present a certain look based on those choices; whereas the Pentax seems to just record the data in a more neutral way.

The A7's strategy seems to be to try to spread the color data out as evenly as possible throughout the tonal ranges. Its designers want the viewer to admire the detail in the highlights, the mids, the lows–just like a TV on display at CES. The Leica seems to try to just reach for the highlights. It seems to spread out the color data so that the extreme highlights are reached–but without the care to make everything even and nice like the A7. It just spreads the histogram out and reaches for the highlights. Which makes sense–they know the glass in front of the sensor can handle it. The Pentax seems to just not make the choice. It seems to just collect the data and record it. It seems to assume that the photographer wants the data as unadulterated as possible–each color in the bin it came in when it got to the sensor to be molded later.

That would make sense in that the photographers using the Sony and the Leica were designed for want amazing images out of the camera. Sony, like their TVs, wants to present the consumer with beautiful, detailed, 'nice' even images. Leica wants to make sure its reputation for contrast creating precision shows up out of the box. Whereas, I think the 645 photographer wants latitude to push the image as they like later. I'm not suggesting in any way that one couldn't get great pictures in-camera on the Pentax, or that one couldn't manipulate the Sony or Leica in post. I'm just suggesting that I think Pentax knows that their photographers want a fairly direct representation of the color data so that they can make it look a lot of different ways.

So, if my very speculative idea (I've only had my 645 for a couple of weeks) has any merit, it would back up your current hypothesis that the Leica has a look and that the Pentax is more formless and designed to be shaped by the photographer later (which you don't want to do). It seems that if you want to avoid post the Pentax isn't going to work. Perhaps a compromise is that you could develop the curves and parameter changes the Pentax needs to look like the Leica and apply them automatically.

I think that many of the photographers using the 645 like that 'ooooh' moment when they bring information out of the deep shadows. But, that's not really what you're after.

Long Lenses on 645z

If you are worried about the wind, you can use my second solution: a 2.5lb sandbag suspended on a paracord loop so that the sandbag is just a few inches off the ground. I have found that that extra stabilization is sometimes necessary with the carbon fiber supports because they transmit more than the older aluminum guys. It doesn't have to be a sandbag. I also have a small nylon bag and I can fill it with rocks or gear.

Going back to your original clues, I notice that you have a lightweight rig. I also have a carbon fiber tripod but it's actually quite light and thus shakes easily. I find that I can make it very solid by hanging my backpack off of it, or adding a 2.5 - 5.0 sandbag to the tripod significantly smooths it out. Have you tried adding weight?

I am. Love it. Love the CCD color. Not as fast as my mirrorless, but so worth the extra effort. When the 645ZII comes out I'll get the Z. When the ZIII comes out I'll get the ZII.

645Z vs Leica S = that look

I don't think there is an aesthetic aversion to your choices, I think it was more about that you're trying to achieve a look like your Leica which doesn't have crushed blacks, while your 645Z shots do. I think the point is, that's a starting place. For example, the first image, if you look at the nose shadow, it's black. The Leica image that follows is also similarly contrasty, but the nose shadow isn't totally dark.

Personally, as an art director, I would choose your 645Z work over the Leica work. I think it expresses the look you are going for better than the Leica. It has the grunge and attitude that I would want for fashion (and is I assume why you like the front flash look), while remaining refined and elevated enough (due to the smooth tonality and resolution) to not be cheap or too punk rock (for high fashion).

The Leica shot looks like precision. The 645Z looks more like caviar.

The biggest difference seems to be the fstop and exposure time. Are you shooting the 645 handheld? The Leica is very sharp probably because it's f/16 and fairly fast exposure. Can you compensate with your flash on the 645 to get it to 1/125- and maybe some more depth of field to get sharp focus? The 645 is very shallow so if you want that crisp poppy quality, you'll just need some more focusing power–at least that's my take.

I agree. I work in marketing/PR/events and rarely does a team want to dilute a message with too many offerings. The K-1 is probably a top priority for the company right now, so all hands will be focused on it until it gets out into the world.

I have tuned my small mirrorless to be a sort of scout camera. I look around take a lot of shots with it. When I find something worthy, then the 645d comes out of the bag. It's pretty big (although still smaller than the 67), but I find that having thought about the shot already and sort of modeled it on my smaller camera, the MF shots are more efficient that way. To me, using the larger camera isn't the hard part, it's scouting with it like it was a small camera is. So, I just split the tasks up and it works nicely that way.

645d Image Preview Hold

OK, thanks. I've upped it to five seconds.

I'm willing to slow down. I don't mind slow speed, but I want it the process flow nicely and not be too clunky so I'm doing some major 'button fiddling'. If the five seconds pause is to cumbersome, I'll try your no preview-manual play mode style.

I just love the sound of the exposure: thwack-whirr.

645d Image Preview Hold

Hello Pentaxians.

I'm the proud new papa of a 645d. I realize it's a bit out of date, but this is my first foray into digital MF and the price seemed right.

On my small cameras there is usually something like a HOLD feature for image previews where after an exposure is taken the preview image stays up until the shutter is half-depressed. Is there some similar setting on the 645d?

I tried the Image Preview mode and this is partially what I want in that it holds the image until I'm ready for it to disappear, but not not what I want in that it's not a preview of an image I have on disk.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

I've never been a Pentaxian before, but guess I sure the hell am now.
