Hi Pete, yes, it can be a good idea to make an album to show the qualities of that lens. I have seen your photo of the buzzard on Istagram and you are right, the rendering of the background is similar to that in some of my photos, it may be a feature of the 560 mm lens, as you say!
Thank you again for your feed-back, and warm regards!
Maurizio

Yes, it is positive that also in the densely populated Europe some wild nature resists and in some cases (mainly thanks to a reduced hunting pressure or the institution of natural parks) proliferates.... I'm happy to know of your origins! You are right, Milan is quite near to the Alps, it is in a good location to start an "exploration" of that mountains. In general, this is a quite positive characteristic of Italy, cities tend to be near to natural areas, distances are not so great... and if next time you plan to come in central Italy, let me know!

Thank you! In general, it has become a little bit easier to see wild animals in the mountains of Italy (and I presume also in the rest of Europe) in the last ten years. Your dragonfly is wonderful! Regards, Maurizio

I never noticed that different behaviour depending if you approach from above ir from below, even if I can not exclude... I believe they tend to be more confident when they are on the rocks (at least, in this case I was quite near, and at higher position with respect to them, but they were very calm). In this part of the mountain, in addition, they are in general quite confident because they all days see persons (hikers). ---------- Post added 09-01-22 at 09:03 PM ----------

You are right, it is steep, and this is more evident in these other shots! (Vertical crops from horizontal frames).

The Appennine chamois mating season is still not ended in our mountains. Here (last sunday), two bold gentlemen wanted to declare their love to the same beautiful lady, but... they had to run!
I cropped a bit the frames, and tried to reduce the motion blur (present in some shots) by software.

Maurizio

Following some of the received suggestions, I edited the image (Lightroom and Topaz sharpening AI) trying to obtain a better evidence of the head. Overall the contrast is a bit increased.

Thank you for the link to your airplane photos Pete, they are awesome!! Yes, I've seen some of your photos with a similar rendering of the background, and maybe you are right concerning the Pentax coating. However, I still have to know the DA 560 a bit better, to understand its rendering in different conditions.

Thanks for this beautiful moon shot and for explaining us how you obtained it. I also have that lens, from the years when I mostly used 6x7, but I still had not tryed it on K1, hence I' m interested in your "cross format" experiment. In your photo, considering the crop factor, I see the details are maintained very well, hence it seems in good hands this combo has worked well! Best regards, Maurizio

What a beautiful bird, congrats! I like this kind of light with this subject. I would try a vertical crop, centered on the intersection of the roof. I find the image very sharp and with low noise considering the high iso... with which software did you perform the post processing?

Thank you for your comment and suggestion, Patrick. I will try to see if I obtain some benefit by enhancing noise reduction in that image, however I fear that that kind of nervous background (if I understood what you mean) is at least in part resulting from the atmospheric conditions (heat haze)... ---------- Post added 25-12-21 at 04:11 PM ----------
Thank you for the very kind words Peter! Yes, I was lucky with the light and with the presence of the birds, that not always may be observed at relatively short distance. And yes, they are beautiful birds, it is spectacular to observe their flight! ---------- Post added 25-12-21 at 04:13 PM ----------

Dear Pete, thank you again for your kind and expert comments! I'm still learning to use this lens (the 560), do you have it? In some of these photos, indeed, the background looks a little bit on the "catadioctric side", as you say. However, sometimes I obtained a somewhat similar background (at least to my eye) also with 150-450, and I attributed it to the heat haze... I still have much to learn about these long lenses and their rendering at different distances and atmospheric conditions!
Best regards, Maurizio ---------- Post added 25-12-21 at 04:40 PM ----------

Thank you for the kind comment and for the suggestion about post processing. You are right, I pulled the shadows up to show well the details of the plumage... When I have time I will try to change something in the post processing in order to enhance the evidence of the head and increase the contrast... ---------- Post added 25-12-21 at 04:47 PM ----------

Last sunday I went to a mountain place I have known for many years to take some picture of the griffon vultures living there, and to do some practice with the long lens. The first shot I post here is the one I like best. It is a stitch of two consecutive frames (in each of these two original shots, one or the other of the wing tips was out of the frame). I used Lightroom and Photoshop also to optimize contrast, color and sharpness. Any comment or suggestion is welcome. I also add here some other photos taken in the same occasion, to show the griffons with some natural background. In most of the shots, the reduced sharpness and the nervous background are probably mainly due (I believe) to heat haze. The first shot at 1/2000 f8 ISO 1000, the others at f5.6 or 8, at various ISO (160-2500) and speed of 1/2000-1/3200.
Best wishes to all,
Maurizio

Hi all,
I had the DA 560 and the K3 III for about six months, but still did'nt had many occasions to use them and still have to do much practice to learn the optimal technique. This is probably the best shot I obtained with the 560 lens up to now. I stitched two consecutive frames (otherway the tips of the left or the right wing would be lacking).
I will post some other shots with this combo in the photo critique section.
Best wishes,
Maurizio |

If you are not sure, you could buy the lens first, experiment a bit with it, and in case add filters and filter mounts in a second moment, if you need...
