I am sure there is a button and a reason, but I will be working along and suddenly the camera just goes blank and nothing works. I have to turn the camera off and back on to keep going on what I am doing. What is this and how can I prevent it? Please.

Without some idea of what lens is being used, these photos are not as useful as learning guides. How about posting what lenses have been used, please.

I have that adapter and knocked out the lousy glass, so there is nothing but a bit of extension there.

Question on Pixel-Shift

I will check all of that out. Here is another one I can't figure out.

I have a Nikon-to-Pentax converter that I knocked the "bad" glass out of, so it no longer tries for infinity. That is fine, because I am all about close-up photography. Then I mounted an Zeiss Otus 55mm f/1.4 on the converter to try that lens out with the Pentax sensor and pixel-shift. However, it has a hot spot of light in the middle of the frame that will not go away. How do I explain this and is there anything I can do about it?

Question on Pixel-Shift

I am using Pixel-Shift, with a non-Pentax lens, so it is not coupled. Do I understand it right that I have to have some form of Timer on when I do Pixel-shift. Also, is there any way to turn off or disable time Timer Light which flashes in my fast as I try to focus?

And last, is there any way while I am trying to use Focus-Shift with a non-coupled lens to SEE in LiveView the amount of light I am getting in the frame, as I turn the wheel-dial to select exposure, other than trial and error?

I will see what I can manage here. One nice thing is that my Sigma 35mm ART lens for the Pentax mount arrived, and it really is a nice lens, especially with pixel-shift.

Thanks for the help!

Question on What We See When We Change Aperture and Shutter in LiveView

I have taken advice all from all comers, so somewhere that is what happened. The Preview got set to DIgital, and that is what confused me for many days. Now I see how it works. It is not how I would like it, but I will get used to it in a while, hopefully. It is doable. Thanks all!

---------- Post added 06-15-16 at 08:43 AM ----------

I still have one confusion. When I look at an image in LiveView, magnified, and with the Preview Button, I can see the depth-of-field, but not the proper amount of light. It is way too bright. Is there a way around this or is this just how it is?

Question on What We See When We Change Aperture and Shutter in LiveView

I am not tethered. I am in LiveView, and turn the ON/OFF Switch to the far end, clockwise, and I see depth-of-field in real time on LiveView. AND, if I do this in MAGNIFY MODE, I can see where to focus within the depth-of-field I have selected. This seems to work and it is doable, but a little like the old kid thing of rubbing your tummy and patting your head at the same time. You need both hands to bring it off.

OK, I found my mistake. I had "Digital Preview" enabled. By turning it off, I can see DOF by turning the ON/OFF switch to far clockwise.... AND I can magnify and focus at the same time. Does this sound correct?

What I need (or am used to) is to view the actual DOF in LiveView... AND magnify and focus in that DOF, so that I can clearly see what is in focus. Can we do this?

Question on What We See When We Change Aperture and Shutter in LiveView

I am a newbie to Pentax, but not to photography. I just got a copy of the Sigma 35mm f.1.4 ART lens, which is coupled to the K1 body. Very nice lens. Here is my question:

Even with a lens that is coupled to the Pentax K1. When I look at a still-life scene in LiveView (I am shooting in pixel-shift mode, non moving), I see the flowers I am going to be photographing. When I turn one of the dials, I can see the shutter change and a change in the light on the flowers. When I turn the other dial, I see the aperture change, which also affects the light.

However, it seems, aside from darkening and lightening, that what I see does not change, aperture-wise, meaning I don't see more or less of the depth-of-field in LiveView, but just a static view of the lens wide open. Is this the way it is? Is there no way, with a coupled lens, to see the aperture change the DOF in Live-View, AND when I magnify, same deal. Magnified, I have to TRY to focus on the lens wide-open, even if I have it set to f/16 and need to see the depth of field in order to focus properly.

Please enlighten me to the possibilities.

No, I am not cropping or JPG, just raw. I am breaking in the Sigma 35mm ART lens, which is very nice with the K1.

I meant MB, sorry. It corrected itself... somehow. It must have turned pixel-shift off by itself, although I have it set to always be on... Memory. Thanks everyone!

K1 Pixel-Shift File Size

I am shooting pixel-shift images (not motion) and getting file size of maybe 70 KB, instead of the 150 KB or so I expect. I watch the camera shoot four images, so that indicates pixel-shift is on, but the resulting file size seems too small. Any ideas?

well, the K1 has many good features, which I will use. Working on a bellows with exotic lenses will not be one of them, unless I want to got the trial-and-error route just to get the pixel-shift. My guess is that later this year we will see other interesting new camera version, probably megapixels and perhaps some other pixel-shifting. Hassleblad and others have used pixel-shift, for example. I am not brand loyal, only feature loyal. I like the K1. I am a color freak, so here is some more pure color!

Mostly I stack focus, which means I may take 100 photos, which are combined into a single image in post. I don't use automated focus rails to incrementally stack, because all objects are not the same. For example, if I am stepping through an image from front to back (or vice versa, or random), some parts of the subject take more or less photo layers to capture correctly. Focus Stacking is, like CDs or DVDs, digital sampling, meaning some information is captured, which other info is left out. When we stack a spherical objects, like a globe or any rounded object, we have to focus and step through tighter increments in order not to have a stair-step effect. Not always, but most often, I have to visually see what I am doing and re-magnify, since most cameras don't hold the magnification, etc., and my focus depends on what I am doing.

I can understand that those folks who don't stack focus have a different view on all this, taking a one-off photo, rather than a stream of photos. So, my workflow "needs" it, at least much of the time.

I have that set to the 2nd position. I am doing fine with the K1 with lenses that are coupled to the camera, but working with bellows, etc., not of which I automate, is too difficult so far to, say, make an image with 100 layers.

As for why some folks are getting heated over my learning curve, I am sorry about that. Not my intention. New camera, poor manual, not enough time, etc. Same old same old.

Sample idea of what I do. Nikon D810, El Nikkor 105mm APO, Zerene Stacker

The 2nd image is with the K1 and the Voigtlander 90mm APO Lanthar f/3.5, lightly stacked

The D810 photo was to communicate to someone who asked what I am trying to do with the K1. If I could do it, I would be showing you a K1 photo, but as we can see, the K1 does not favor lenses that are not linked electronically to it. The fact that I'm is because the K1 has some great features, but working with non-Pentax lenses with no electronic connection is not one of them. For example, here is my experience with the Sony A7rII, another very well-featured camera:

I took the Sony A7rII out of the box, placed it on one end of a Novoflex BALPRO bellows system and a El Nikkor 105mm APO enlarger lens on the other. Then I switched the camera on for the first time. Right there on the LCD was the image of a flower I wanted to photograph. I reached for the camera, grabbed it and moved the back rotary dial. The shutter speed moved up and down, causing the light in the image in the LCD to vary accordingly. That’s about all I need and is what I’m talking about here and looking to find a way achieve with the K1.

I greatly appreciate the help Pentax users have provided here and have said so. I come in peace.

The Pentax K1 Pixel-Shift Vs. the Nikon D810

I am new here, so I had better introduce myself a little. The Pentax K1 is new to me, but not photography. I am impressed with the zeal and the interest in the technical aspects of photography at this Pentax forum. Nice group and with real interest! I may just hang out here as I learn the K1.

I mostly hang at NikonGear.com, Luminous-Landscape.com, Fotozones.com, and other sites. Many questions have been asked in this thread and I probably don’t have time to answer them all in detail. I will try a couple.

The reason I use lenses that are fast (f/1.4, etc.) wide open and well corrected is that I mostly stack close-up images. I include one below that I put up on Dpreview.com just for this forum, since we can’t post images here directly from our hard drives (correct me if I am wrong). A lens that is fast wide-open can use the narrow DOF of a fast-wide-open lens to “paint” focus to build a block of the image in sharp focus, while leaving the rest of the photo to go to good bokeh. As for the “well-corrected” part, the secret IMO to real sharpness is not just acutance and resolution, but color correction, i.e. not having all that horrible fringing that muddies the color.

My reason for an interest in the Pentax K1 is the treatment of color purity by the avoidance of the muddy (by definition) color from Bayer interpolation achieved with the Pentax Pixel-Shift.

The reason to use LiveView is to be able to magnify the image to achieve more exact focus. Here is an example of a close-up shot taken with the Nikon D810 with the El Nikkor 105mm APO lens (on a bellows), and Zerene Stacker.

Lenses with Pentax Mount that are Fast, Well-Corrected, and Sharp Wide-Open

Thanks, I have ordered the Sigma 35mm ART lens, scratch and all.

I have the Voigtlander 90mm APO-Lanthar (old and new versions), the 40mm Ultron, and I had a Voigtlander 125mm APO-Lanthar in Pentax mount, but the "A" position on the aperture ring did not work.

As mentioned, I am looking for close-up/macro lenses that are fast wide open, well-corrected (APO), and sharp.
