X-Trans critique - article

ive shot with fuji, both the original bayer sensor of the x100 which i still have, and three different incarnations of xtrans. ive also shot with leica, oly, panny, sony and pentax. xtrans raw files simply do not stand up to any of them. before this artcle the many ways this was true had been well documented--much of the evidence provided by fuji fans. at this point it is honestly beyond dispute. now that doesnt mean that people cannot rightfully decide they either like the xtrans anomolies, dont mind them , or find other factors compensate for them. but at this point, they just cant argue about them being real.

for fuji itself, ive long said xtrans was a massive mistake for one simple reason: many many more people choose against fuji solely because of xtrans than those who choose fuji solely because of xtrans. but like so many including our political leadership, they insist on doubling down on a bad idea instead of just correcting a well intentioned error and moving forward.

Pentax KP - Specifications

dont be so sure. ive shot fuji and unless youre willing to spend lots of time on PP, i (and many others) found the xtrans sensor yields RAW results that cannot hold a candle to any of fujis competitors. a friendly suggestion is that you borrow or rent a fuji before investing.

fwiw (probably not very much) my personal opinions/observations on the KP are

retro look soley for the sake of 'look' is meaningless. add dedicated iso and SS knobs and make the 'look' meaningful in practice;

again, making it 'look' compact is also meaningless when it is actually heavier than pentaxs existing offerings;

ridiculously high iso option always turn out to be meaningless in practice. the reality is for 99% of people in 99% of real life situations decent results at 6400-12,800 is all thats necessary, unless you live in a cave and do not have access to candles. same for SS over 1/6-8000.

once again, the difference between 24mp and pentaxs existing (and imo outstanding) 20mp cameras will not make a truly discernible difference to 99% of users in 99% of situations;

so, at the end of the day, as another member said above, just another dslr, how disappointing.

i am overwhelmingly happy with the look, size, performance and results of my lowly ks2. if i want 'more' theres the k1. go home folks, nothing to see here.

Camera Brand Loyalty

i decided against brand loyalty after the 49ers traded joe montana. if theres no loyalty to an actual person who brings your club four champioships, why should there be loyalty to inanimate objects (and the faceless corporations who make them) that simply do (or often dont do) what you paid for them to do? yeah, a bit tongue in cheek, but then again a bit not...

i am relatively new here, as my longtime digital background is in rangefinder and mirrorless. about a year ago i tried the ks2 on a lark because i wanted weather sealing. i havent looked back. first and foremost i just really enjoy the files from this camera. they come closer to the warmth and glow of my leica gear than any other camera ive ever used. my journey has led me to a place where i feel a few excellent lenses work better for me than a bunch of 'really good' lenses, and if youre in that zone pentax mount offers several superb choices, again up there in leica cron territory, imo. fun size-fact for those who eschew dslr for 'lighter' mirrorless: the ks2 is almost identical size and weight-wise to the new highly lauded m4/3 oly omdem1mkii! anyway, i dont post alot of photos, but i like this one because it shows off both the camera and the wonderful native zeiss hollywood distagon.

What constitutes 'low light'
Posted By rbelyell

to me its if the abscence of light in a scene necessitates me using iso1600 or higher. it strikes me that what 'causes concern' to photographers about 'low light' situations thus defined is their camera's ablity to handle shadows and noise at 1600 plus. of course we can im sure come up with dozens of other situations that capture some minute part of some minute minoritys 'concerns'. but imo its best to keep it simple and squarely in the mainstream. if youre camera performs well in the abscence of good light at 16-6400 youre overwhelmingly likely to not be concerned about 'low light' photography.

the way you use that pentax 28/3.5 makes me wonder about why one needs that exquisite 28 'cron!

everyone is on their own journey. mine has led me to a place where i now realize for me i would rather have 2-3 superb lenses than the dozens of nice glass i used to have. using less has made me a better photographer. using really top glass makes me happy. selling off 95% of my gear to concentrate on a couple pieces has allowed me to have both! good luck to you in your journey--you certainly have the talent to make work whatever road you take.

with the quality of photos you take, if youre going to buy M glass, invest in leica not voigtlander. ive done both. theres nothing wrong with voigtlander M, some are quite nice, but what youre doing deserves better and nothing is better M than leica.

yes. i really like the berry shot--incredibly vibrant and nicely framed. sometimes its really hard to control the background, and i just find it a littke distracting, so i wondered how itd look if you either trued to blacken it out or desaturate it. dont mean any offense, so please dont take any--just trying to be helpful!

rumored Pentax mirrorless camera - something between K1000 and K-01

ive been following this thread for awhile, and its been awhile since anything relevant was said about a possible new pentax mirrorless. i keep hoping, though participants seem intent on travelling further and further afield. at the end of the day, i guess the only logical conclusion to draw is no one actually has any relevant information. thus an intersting discussion that has long ago devolved into several different and quite meaningless threads. who was it that said something about 'a great sound and fury signifying nothing'? not sure, but it mustve been after experiencing something similar to this.

i dont know how much smaller a lens can be than the m4/3 14/2.5, 20/1.7, 9-18 and 12-32 zooms. and i could go on. ive shot almost evry camera system and m4/3 are the smallest by a very large margin. plus for those who like to shoot vintage lenses, m4/3 cams handle the very small m mount rangefinder lenses much better than any other mirrorless alternative other than native m mount digitals.

Avalanche of New Lenses: Third Party Pentax ......

i look at this a bit differently, namely what lenses do i want? personally i no longer feel like i need or want a ton of lenses. rather, ive tried over the last few years to find a greater understanding of how i shoot, the kind of rendering i like, and cull the herd to those few lenses that meet that criteria. i find there is something to the phrase 'jack of all trades master of none' when applied to lenses. after finding the few lenses that fit my above criteria, i am more concentrating on learning how to use them, what they can do and how i can get the most out of them. new for the sake of new holds absolutely no interest to me. by those criteria--certainly subjective and not for everyone!--i find way more than enough excellent pentax and third party lenses. between the fa and da limiteds and the zeiss zk, i can happily shoot and continue to learn for years.

well one can surely see the 'leica look' in these photos. does the mount conversion allow for auto metering, or is it a 'green button' affair?

5 reasons to choose Pentax

i think what hes saying is pretty simple to grasp, and i have made the same observation: there are many who post here frequently who brook no criticism of pentax. period. and they express that not in well thought out reasoning--which is fine--but in thinly veiled--and often not so thinly veiled--ad hominim attacks on the poster and/or ridiculous characterizations of the original criticisms/observations. even a cursory review of this thread amply demonstrates that point. in this respect, unfortunately, this forum does not distinguish itself from most other forums, where users conflate their gear with their ego, or their family, to be defended to the death. i think if we stick to reasoned debate, there would be no issue at all.

oh, never woulda thunk that, thanks. my ks2 has orange bottom and gets lotsa compliments! however, just like many choose leica for 'color rendition' in results, i think one can make that choice with pentax, and that may be ultimately even more important than my orange bottom!

i think his point was he 'expected' accuracy in the statement he sited. further to your second point, it is most certainly not the responsibility of consumers to make purchases in order to somehow prod manufacturers into making more products. now my above posted comments show i dont totally agree with OP, but honestly, the tone some people take here is extremely off-putting. no ones attacking anyones family here, its just gear.

well, id have to agree about lens selection when viewed comparatively to other mfgs. but id disagree on the same basis about lightweight lenses as pentax has more of them than other dslr mfgs. i also disagree that 'color variation' difference is BS, if by 'variation' one means 'pleasing rendition'. frankly i dont like dslrs, and the main reason i enjoy pentax is for what i feel is a rather unique look to their images, and to the boldness of their colors. they match my eye so i like it; others may not. but i certainly feel i can pick a photo ive taken w pentax gear from one ive taken with sony gear. so to paraphrase Meatloaf, 'dont be sad cause 4 outta five aint bad'!

ya know, theres just no reason to call someones post 'stupid'. thats what i dont like about the internet, because there are no consequences, it emobldens people to speak to others in ways where, if they spoke the same way in person, it might get them a black eye. try addressing people civilly, as not doing so speaks more about you than the person you insult.

Really happy with the 20-40 + 77 combo on APC

this is the exact combo i use, and i too am very happy with it as it covers a great deal of situations very well. i recently picked up a zk 28/2 for when i need a faster indoor option. the unique character of this lens's curved glass has made me appreciate the 20-40 even more, as it has similar characteristics. personally, though i know the 100 macro or the 100 makro planar are awesome lenses, i wouldnt want to cut down on the few opportunities i have to use the 115mm on apsc fov i get from that amazing 77! having used leica lenses for some time, i honestly feel the three pentax i have now can rival them for character, the 28 can rival them in build quality and 77 can rival them in pretty much every performance aspect.
