And please ditch the metal PENTAX badge on the camera. The 645D looks so much better.

The main problem I have with the 645z video is the Moire. As you can see it is a bit apparent on your DVD collection.

Hi, I have the 400mm and I love it. I agree with most of what has been said about it here. Thanks for doing this test.
The bokeh can look a little janky at times.
I got the 2x tele-extender when I got my copy of the lens and now I'm trying to sell it. I just can't really get sharp results with it. I am actually better off just cropping into the regular 400mm files than using the 2x. Maybe I just got a bad copy of the 2x, I dunno. I am looking forward to trying the 1.4x.

Don't hate. Jut look on ebay in the sold listings. There are a bunch of $2200, $2300 etc etc. It happens almost every day. I think it's funny when perople post this lens starting at like $6000 or $7000. Like wtf man I can walk into any camera shop on buy it for $4000. Was it the pope's or something?

Agreed. When I bought my 645z I emailed pentax like, 'I just bought your $8000 camera. Can I please have the tethering software for free." They said no. ;)

I mean it's one of the best wide angle lenses for any MF system. It has built in stabilization which was a first for MF lenses. It is extremely sharp across the whole frame. Besides its weight it is a near perfect lens and you wonder why it is expensive? It is very cheap compared to Leica, Phase one etc.
Don't be afraid of buying used lenses. The japanese ebay sellers are very honest. I have bought many perfect used lenses from them. I have seen the 28-45 go for as little as $2000.

My experience is I really wanted it to work. I tried Alex's capture fix and it appeared at first to be working fine. But then I found strange color problems in my files. For example on a portrait where the hairline meets the skin there would be a strange color edge around the hairline. It wasn't visible just glancing at the files but when you would zoom in or export a file it would appear. Obviously this was unacceptable so I switched back to Lightroom. The past few updates Lightroom has become better and better performance wise. Tethering is still a bit slow but I can live with it.

I got a mint 400 5.6 from a japan ebay seller for $800. Awesome lens but my tripod is not study enough for long exposures. In good light and shutter speeds above 1/500 the results are amazing. Bokeh is a little vintage looking sometimes especially with specular highlights in the oof. I got the 2x tele extender and after trying it I want to sell it. You are better off just shooting the regular 400mm and then cropping. I might give the 1.4x extender a try as it has better reviews.

I would say get the D. I have the Z. If I could do it again I might go your route..a nice dslr good for low light. And then separately the D (or leica S006, or hassy X with CCD phase back)
I prefer the color out of the ccd chips. Especially in the skin tones. And these MF rigs are big and slower....optimal on a tripod. The Z or D is not fun to carry around all day...on a strap it hangs funny against your body. So for those times you can carry the 810. I think its good having both systems.

You'll need good light high shutter speed or strobes but yea should be a flattering combo.
I have used the 400mm on the Z for portraits.

U should just get a 645D body and have that as a backup. I find the colors more pleasing out of the box on the D anyway.

The new Shanny flash for Pentax is a pretty good deal. Its a little over $100 and does p-ttl and high speed sync!
The one downside is that I couldn't get the iR-flash assist to work on the 645z. The flash itself is a clone of the canon 580 exii.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I had read that before so I was trying it in my dark walk in closet and it still wouldn't fire the beam.

I just received this flash last night. I bought it mainly for the AF assist as I sometimes shoot events with the Z.
Anyway, I can't seem to get the AF assist working at all. Does anyone else use this combo?
I looked through the custom settings, I tried using AF.S, I tried turning my back button AF off... no dice.
Cheers

I use the Flashwave 3 to trigger my strobes/flashes. It is a great little radio transceiver/receiver. I actually got it for my Leica's because it is so small...like a mini pocketwizard. Anyway, it works great on the 645z. But you can also plug the receiver into the flash micro jack on the camera and use the transceiver to trip the shutter. I also have a regular iR remote, but it is nice not having to rely on line-of-sight sometimes.

Yea check it out, run a few rolls through it.
Also, FYI you can de-yellow a old lens just by letting it sit in the sun on your window sill. The UV will clear that up.
You can also use a LED lamp if you live in Holland, the UK...or Seattle. You Tube |

Yea you can change that screen out. There are several different kinds available (split focus, matte, different grids) and its an easy job. While you are doing that, take a rocket blower to behind the screen up there. The dust is on the prism.

Not that exact screen but I got the DK-80 Matte version with the golden ratio grid.
I had a slight problem installing mine, I guess it wasn't properly seated by first attempt and I noticed my auto-focus would hunt back and forth which is strange in good light. I switched back to the original screen and all was fine. Then I re-inserted the DK-80 and was a bit more careful making sure it was seated properly and the frame was fastened perfectly. Autofocus was fine the second time around. All of this occurred over around 5 minutes so overall it is a pretty easy mod.
When you take out your original screen, you will be able to tell if your new screen is going to fit. Make sure the two side tabs are in the same locations and you should be good to go.

Interesting. While I own the 645z I have never really been into the colors it produces. Especially skin tones, and highlights in general.
I much prefer the look of the larger pixel backs and CCD sensors. I am usually much more "wowed" by colors from older Leica S, Hassy, Phase or Leaf. I much prefer the color output from the 645D as well...same Kodak ccd.

I'm pretty sure the lightroom plugin only works with the Z. I think u need image transmitter 2 software which unfortunately is $200.

True, but the 006 is in the $5K territory now...that is the one to get at the moment. Plus the adapter can be found for $1000ish.
I almost went this route instead of the 645z........almost! ;)
