Canadian $ at par with US $- Why aren't retail prices at par?

Jeff,

I have to agree. Unfortunately, this is happening in many industries, most notably publishing, electronis, and vehicles. I own 2 Mazdas. Mazda Canada still prices parts based on a $1.35 exchange rate. They do not seem at all interested in adjusting prices, despite a grassroots movement that has seen many owners email them and tell them everytime they order parts from the US. A story on the news this week said that more new Porsches were imported from the US last year, than Porsche Canada sold. Porsche is adjusting 2008 prices in Canada down quite a bit. I think this is the only way to affect change. Buy from the US, let your local camera store know you are doing it, and make them fight the manufacturers for more fair pricing.

I rarely leave the house without the camera in a bag, just for this reason. Even if I don't intend to carry the camera bag with me when I get to where I am going, I usually put the camera and bag on the floor of the car when I am driving. Even without the bag, I put the camera on the floor in the backseat. I figure it can't fall as far if it is alreay on the floor.

I have a LowePro EX 160 that works well for storing the camera with a single lens (or 2) while in the car. Picked it up for $20. Cheap insurance. Oh ya, and I never go anywhere with the flash attached. Makes me nervous. I worry enough about whacking the flash on something when I am carrying the camera around with me while shooting!

A spare 35mm film body is probably not a bad idea if you have paid shoots coming up. They are regularly for sale in the local classifieds from $50 and up.

Carlos Santana Sold out to Sony

Carlos Santana selling Sony, U2 selling I-Pods, Frank Sinatra selling vacuum cleaners. Music is a business. Musicians are businessmen, selling their product to whomever wants to pay for it. Whatever. I'm not going to buy a Sony Alpha because I like Carlos Santana. I'm not going to burn my Carlos Santana CD's because I like Pentax.

Cute dog! I like te photo. I think hte waterfall makes a good backdrop. While mine ae not pro eyes, I think that this photo would benefit from some cropping. The tree on the left, in particular, is distracting. I would try a crop that removes the tree, so that the watterfall fills the frame from left to right, and take out some of the foreground grass at the same time. Removing some of the grass would move Jax into the foreground of the picture, where he would anchor the photo better.

I don't have any comments on the PP. It looks good to my eye.

Nice shots Al. I haven't seen a lot of photos from the Sigma 105. Were you using the built-in flash, or something else?

BTW, welcome to the forum.

How large have you printed from your 6mp camera?

Dave,

18x24 $2.99 at Costco for online orders. I think $4.99 in store. They also do 18x36 panoramas, instore only, $9.99. Sadly, we cannot get 20x30 from Costco in Canada. Hopefully that will change. They also print everything on Fuji Crystal Archive photographic paper, and will happily fix any problems.

As the title says, what is the largest print you have made from your 6MP DSLR? I had the local Costco print the photo below at 18"x24" ($2.99), and was very impressed. The photo has been cropped slightly, and is actually closer to 5MP than 6. It convinced me that unless you want to print poster-size prints for close examination, or print severely cropped photos, you don't need 10MP.

The cone survived with aggressive resuscitation.

Thanks for the pictures Dave. Seeing the lens used at a location I am familiar with helps to visualize the range.

As for elling my first-born, since I don't have one to sell at the moment, can I borrow yours, Scott?

Sigma 400mm AF

Thanks for the advice guys. The lens pictured is not the actual lens I am looking at, just a pic I found online. The curent price that is being asked for it is too high, so I think I will have to wait a while and hope that I can get a price reduction if it doesn't sell.

Sigma 400mm AF

I'm hoping someone can tell me a little bit about this lens. I have done a lot of searching, and everything I find seems to be on the APO lens. This lens does not have any APO marking on it. It looks like this:

It is a f/5.6, AF 72mm front filter, with integral hood. It is marked 'multi-coated', but has no macro or APO markings. The seller has the front cap, and a Pentax rear cap. He does not have the case (if it came with one) or manual.

Is it any good? What is it worth in good condition? Glass appears to be clean and clear, with no obvious fungus. The lens body has a few scuff marks, but is in decent shape.

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Interesting so far. Can you tell us the price of the 'wunderbar' Canon 100-400mm IS USM L compared to the 'no USM required' Tamron 70-300 XR DI.

Image Quality - Various Macro Lenses

The Cosina/Phoenix/Vivitar/Pentax f/3.5, despite being several hundred dollars cheaper, certainly holds its own in this test. Where it falls down, of course, is that it is only capable of 1:2 magnification without the matched adapter (Pentax version does not include the adapter). I would like to see the resolution with the adapter in place. For the money I don't think this lens can be beat. Once one gets past the build quality and the scary-noisy AF, it is a terrific find.

Nothing to look down on here! The second photo is stunning. The 77mm is pretty fantastic for a non-macro lens. What species of rose is it?

Which Tripod

Hi Guys,

I have a couple of questions about the Amvona Tripods. I currently have a cheap Giottos, and a Manfrotto monopod, with 486RC2 head. Does Amvona make any tripods with a horizontal feature for the centre column? I have been interested in the Manfrotto 190Pro for this feature, but it is pricey. Second question is about the quick release plates on the Amvona heads. They look similar, but Anvona doesn't specify this.

Fun with my A-50 f/1.4

My A-50 1.4 has been under-utilized since I purchased it, so I put it on the camera for a few days, and tried to explore the possibilities of wide-open shooting. These are a couple of my favorites:

K100D f/1.4, 1/400, ISO200

K100D f/1.4, 1/25, ISO200, handheld with SR

I love the way this lens renders OOF highlights. I do find that I need more practice with MF. A new screen might be on the 'WTB' list soon.
